“Maybe we should, yeah.” Nova pursed her lips together and looked up to the sky. As the stream of droplets ran down her face and the strange neon signs around us reflected colors of yellow and red onto her skin, for some reason, I couldn’t help but think that she was beautiful in her own way. “But I’m hungry.” She huffed. “So it might have to be food first, or else I can’t promise I’ll be able to help you.”
I laughed. She was right, we did need provisions. And… I glanced down to my hands. The blood was beginning to fade thanks to the rainwater. I wish I knew who it belonged to.
“Wondering if you’re a murderer?” Nova suddenly asked me. Her tone wasn’t that of accusations, it was casual, just like when she had mentioned she needed to eat.
I nodded, and said no words, because what was there to say when you got to this point? When you didn’t remember who you were, where you came from, and what you were.
She walked past me. She said, “We don’t have time to worry. We need to go.” Her statement was absurd. Of course I wanted to know if I had killed a man, helped one live, or skinned something that might not have been human—I didn’t think I could live properly if I never found out.
I shoved my hands into my pockets and felt the gun in its lining. Maybe I should have felt something, but my heart was empty. Nova’s statement was absurd, yes—but true, very true. I didn’t have time. “Where are we going?” I asked her as she tugged on the door that led down a stairwell, until it stopped resisting her strength and finally opened.
Nova paused to look at me from over her shoulder. My shadow cast a dark figure upon her form, it was a strange sight, one that I was sure I would never forget either out of all the things that happened tonight.
She smirked.
A) “You have a gun, don’t you? Let’s rob someone.”
B) “If memory serves me right, there’s a convenience store and a restaurant nearby. You ready for a dumpster dive?”
C) “I saw a flyer where it said a church was giving out free food. Let’s try finding it again so we can get the address and stuff our faces.”
