Jake, seven -

Prologue

I stood in my room cowering in fear, like a dog with his tail between his legs, admitting defeat in front of his predator. I stood in the corner with my hands on face, praying that I didn’t hear my name resound these halls, but prayers are seldom answered.

“Jake!” My father yelled.

My legs trembled as I descended the stairs. I dragged my legs to the living room and it wasn’t easy, it was like boulders had been attached to my legs, weighing down my each step. My father’s screams got louder with each passing second. I entered the room and I meekly asked, “Yes?”

When his eyes met mine, I could almost feel the disgust he felt for me, the resentment I was subjected to. Was it because I had been cursed with the same blonde hair and the same piercing blue eyes as the mother who bore me in her womb?

“Bring me a beer.”

As he said those words something happened, I became transfixed. My legs wouldn’t move. Move Dammit! I had brought him a beer,a thousand times before, why… why couldn’t I move. He looked at me with those bloodshot eyes, burning holes in me. He yelled at me but I.. I just couldn’t move.

And, there it was, actual fear had gripped my heart. He grabbed the beer bottle and flung it across the room. Before my eyes could actually follow the movement, I had already been hurt. My shoulder was wounded and blood oozed out unceasingly, shards of glass pierced my skin, I clasped my shoulder and a scream escaped my mouth.

The keys jingled in the lock at the front door and I saw a woman, Mrs. Dale, our neighbor, to be specific, on the gate.

The last thing I remember was being rushed to the hospital, my father nowhere in sight and Mrs. Dale clutching my hand.

I am Jake, and this my story.
