Chapter- 2
Sunlight seeped in through the tiny gaps between the blinds, the feeling of joy and chirping of birds poured into the room, but as I had recently said, joy doesn’t last long.
The feeling of joy in my room was overpowered by the voice of Satan aka Hayden. “Get up, you dork. It’s time for breakfast.”
I lazily rubbed my eyes and got out of the bed, stretching my limbs.
Twenty minutes later, I was ready for school. Bathed, clothed, packed just not mentally prepared. See, when you are a small kid like me with no friends and most of the girls are taller than you, you become and object of bullying. It’s never pleasant for kids like us.
I walked down the stairs on the magnificent, extravagant ground floor and headed to the dining room. Beth, Hayden and Dad were already seated on the table and I took the chair next to Hayden because it felt like the most natural thing to do till he scowled, I repeat, scowled at me.
Being the good person I am, I nicely said, “Good Morning.”
After finishing breakfast, I stood up to leave for school, when Beth asked, “How’re you going to school?”
“Like I usually do, on foot.”
Cue: unnecessary dramatic gasp. “The school is forty- five minutes away! Hayden can take you.”
“Oh, that won’t be necessary at all, I am fine with walking.”
“Nonsense! You’ll take him, Hayden, won’t you?” She said looking at Hayden.
No matter how much of a good actor Hayden was he couldn’t conceal his displeasure at that moment.
“Mom, I have to pick up Alex, so-” Hayden’s speech was cut off by his mom’s response
“So? What?”
“So, I have a four seater, I’ll take him.” Hayden replied and smiled sweetly at his mom. He put his arm over my shoulder, the height difference painfully evident as he mumbled to me, “Not, one day here and you’re already ruining my life.”
I hate his very existence.
Even after many, many displays of reluctance, I was forced to sit in the backseat of Hayden’s car.
“You can just drop me off at the turn, I’ll walk from there.” I said to a very angry looking, Hayden.
“You’ll miss school. I’ll just drop you off a few meters from school so that no one can see you with me.”
After that, there was a long, awkward silence in the car till Hayden pulled up in front of another huge house.
And out came, the most handsome guy, you would ever lay eyes on. Brown hair falling to his eyes, grey eyes, shining with hope. A muscular body that should’ve been declared illegal. This was Alex, Hayden’s best friend. I knew him, even the janitor knew him, even the lunch lady knew him.
He opened the door and sat in the front seat. He turned back to look at me with a puzzled look and asked Hayden, “Is this your mom’s boyfriend’s son?"
Hayden nodded in return and Alex said “Hi” to me.
Alex said Hi to me.
I was going to be giddy for the rest of the day.
As promised, Hayden dropped me a few meters before school and I walked in the rest of the way, alone.
This was going to be a long day.
