Lindsay levelled him with a glare, not that it was possible for him to read her mind. Licking her lips clean after finishing another piece of bacon, she hadn’t realized just how hungry she had been. Standing up slowly, stretching her legs out with a groan, her muscles were stiff from having sat on the floor reading. Having gotten through four of the journals she’d found before Mathew had come down. Studying the dark man where he sat, watching her. His face didn’t give any of his thoughts away, and he hadn’t been very forthcoming with answers.
“You mentioned a shower,” he only nodded and stood, taking the plate from her. Lindsay bent down and picked up a pair of jeans and a dark blue shirt from the pile of clothes. The shimmery white gown caught her eye as she stood upright. The light coming from the top of the stairs showed the iridescence of the material. Shifting from green to blue and even purple in the light. “Where did it come from?” her voice was like a whisper.
“It’s from where we come from,” came Mathew’s voice from behind her. It startled her, she hadn’t been aware that she had even spoken out loud. Turning back toward the mountain of a man and arching a copper brow at him.
“That is a weird way of putting it,” she remarked, giving him a slow up and down appraisal. He had a strange way of speaking, though she couldn’t hear an accent in his voice so it confused her a little. It was almost like English wasn’t his first language and yet he spoke fluidly.
“I will take you upstairs, and if you’re on good behaviour there is even a room you may use,” without watching to see if she would follow, Mathew turned and left back up the stairs. Every muscle in her body screamed for her to get out of the basement, her feet moved quickly as she hurried forward. Almost afraid that he was kidding when he said he would take her upstairs, nearly tripping over the bottom stair as she rushed to follow him. Clutching the clean clothes to her chest, green eyes wide as she reached the top of the stairs. Immediately she scanned the small hallway.
The basement door was at the very end of the hall, there were only two other doors and then an archway further down, she could see the front door from here. Lindsay’s heart leaped into her throat and she looked at Mathew’s back, wondering if she could rush for the door. The size difference between the two of them decided that it wouldn’t be the best idea. He was much larger then she was and even if she was fast, his long legs would move him forward faster. Pursing her lips and gritting her teeth a little as she glared at his broad shoulders.
Mathew turned from the hall through the archway that turned out to lead into a rather large and open kitchen with a dining table and chairs. The place was neat and clean, which was something that shocked her. In her experience, the male gender wasn’t exactly the cleanest, though her only experience was with high school boys her age. Mathew had taken her plate to the sink before turning back to her, he was watching her look around with a rather amused smile on his face once more. When she turned those green eyes on him it was like his heart stopped for a moment. They were stunning and so expressive, she wouldn’t be able to hide her true thoughts and feelings.
“If you promise to behave, you may have access to the kitchen and a room upstairs, the bed I assure you is more comfortable.” he had leaned back on the counter behind him and crossed his arms as he spoke to her.
“If I behave,” she commented, the same copper brow as before shooting upward. “How long am I to be held against my will?”
“Not long,” was his answer and yet she didn’t believe him.
“Why am I here?” she asked him again this time, her voice was softer, sadder. The sound of it made his heartache and all he wanted to do was fold her with his arms. These thoughts made him stiffen, as if the clenching of muscle would stop him from feeling the need to protect her.
“I can’t tell you,” he finally answered, pushing himself away from the counter and marching across through the archway and back into the hall. Lindsay followed quietly, there was a sitting room at the front of the house to the right of the front door. Heart beating quickly as they neared the door that lead to freedom. She stopped and stared at the security key pad on the inside of the door, all hope fleeing. Her chest felt like she was being crushed and tears burned her eyes as she stared at it.
“Unless you have the code, you cannot open the door. The windows do not open either, your father made sure this house was secure” Mathew felt more then seen her stop moving, coming up close behind her before he had spoken. This explanation was the last straw, Lindsay’s eyes closed slowly as the tears started to fall. She would not be leaving before they had decided she could.
