Lindsey was a badass in my eyes. She knew how to fight and listened to no one, which I used to think was so cool that I wanted to be just like her. I even tried to use a bat to fight off the undead. It only worked half as much as a gun would, but Lindsey told me that she didn’t want me to use one because she was afraid it would hurt me. That was a fear of mine, too, so I never learned.
My fear was worsened when we were under attack and Lindsey got bit.
It was like her heartbeat was in my ears, and she was resting in my arms as I sobbed over her. She had already blacked out from the blood loss and was shaking a bit, getting colder and colder with every passing moment.
She was gone soon after and had started waking up as the undead creature that was left behind. I wasn’t afraid of her; I was so upset that I was ready to leave the world with her because she was my only real friend.
Then, her teeth tore into my chest, drawing blood down my body, but I just gripped her closer to me until our comrades came towards us.
They declared she wasn’t there anymore.
It was time to put her down before she bit me, even though the ship had sailed there already.
The one closest to us drew a gun and pressed it to the back of her head.
The shot still sent chills down my spine whenever I thought about it.
I gazed in at Andreas through the observation window, wondering what it would’ve been like if Lindsey had gotten the same chance I did. Why was I so lucky? What made me any different than her?
I was always the sick, little decrepit child with anxiety and stress and no real future planned for myself.
I must’ve been crying because when Danny came out of the observation room from giving Andreas a check-up, he ran the back of his hand under my eyes.
“Why are you up so late, Lin?”
“I was waiting to talk to you, and I was up already.”
“I don’t really want to discuss this whole thing with Andreas, Lin, if that’s what you mean.”
“Danny, why am I not allowed to deal with this case? Can you, at least, answer that for me?”
“I just worry about you, Lin. I don’t want to risk you getting hurt with her because we don’t know the kind of personality she has yet. And, I’m concerned that you will do something that’ll get you in trouble. The last thing I need is someone telling me that you’ve been put in a jail cell for disrupting the natural flow of everything.” Danny rested his hand on my shoulder and forced me to walk down the hallway with him. “Maybe when she wakes up and we understand more about her, you can go meet her and help her out. For now, there’s no use in trying to do anything with her.” I dropped my eyes away from him, frustrated and feeling a bit defeated. My stomach growled then, startling me. “Have you eaten, Lin?”
“No, I haven’t.”
“Let’s go get something then. I missed dinner, too.” As we walked down to the cafeteria, Danny rubbed my back with his large hand.
We ordered something to eat, even though we were the only ones in the entire cafeteria. He had two grilled cheese sandwiches and vegetable soup with ham while I had a mix of fruit and boiled eggs with salt and pepper on them.
Danny ripped his sandwich in half and dipped one side into the soup, taking a big bite. He liked soup and normally had it whenever I ate with him in the cafeteria, but it was late, so the soup was already warm from the day and grilled cheese only took a bit of time to make. Boiled eggs were already made, too. Late-night meals were a trend for us because I worked alongside Danny more than anyone else did, and we often worked until late in the day.
“Lin, do you want to come to my room tonight to sleep?” I glanced up at him as I bit into an egg.
“I’d love to.” I could tell he felt bad for everything because he normally never let me sleep in his bed with him, even when I needed someone to help me get my head back in place.
Maybe he knew I was upset about other things, too, and just wanted to be there for me.
After we were done eating, we went to his room and fell asleep for the night.
