Synthia was alone for only a few years before I came into her life. Her father died from a lung infection and her mother, full of delusions, ran out and got eaten alive by the zombies.
I had been with her for a year or so when she admitted she had wanted kids and a husband, but that wasn’t a possibility for her. She didn’t want to pass down her bad lungs to a child and leave it for Kevin and me to take care of.
She revealed to me before she passed that she was grateful I was around because it felt like she got to raise a child, even it was only for two years.
She confirmed that she loved me often by giving me gentle kisses on my face or head.
I trusted her when she said it; that’s why I became so loyal and attached to her.
When Jacob brought me to the base, I was cuffed and dragged around by everyone, even though he tried to tell them that I was just a scared kid. He was like Synthia in that way; she always tried to make sure others understood I wasn’t a danger to them.
After a bit of time on the base, I got close to Jacob, falling for him like some kind of teenage crush. But, it was love and devotion.
I guess I fell too hard too fast because he was not on the same side as I was at first.
He was shorter but older than me. He had some gray in his hair but didn’t seem a day over twenty-three (he was twenty-five). He made sure I was comfortable in this new place and showed me how to work things that I hadn’t seen before, like medical machines.
When I kissed him for the first time, he was shocked.
Then, we slowly got more and more intimate in our relationship.
That’s why I was fixated on curing him.
He was all of my firsts, and I wanted to spend the rest of our lives together.
Today was the day we’d give him the cure. We weren’t exactly sure how it’d all go, but we were willing to try our best.
I administered the cure as Danny watched intently at the monitor, starting to wake him up.
In an instant, he moved and started thrashing in agonizing pain. He screamed loud enough to alert others outside of the sound-proof room.
Danny was trying to scramble to find an answer to give me.
I was horrified and tearing up.
“He must have Ivy’s strand, Lin. That’s why we couldn’t just see it; it’s in his blood. We need to give him Cancer Z,” Danny concluded, gripping my shoulders to help me keep myself together. I felt like I was charging up, but he wasn’t being affected by it.
“H-how?” I questioned. He pulled out a sample of my white blood cells and opened it. He dumped it in my mouth forcefully, wiping it on my canines with his gloved finger.
“Quickly before your body destroys it.” I took a deep breath and gripped Jacob’s arm close to my mouth. I sunk my teeth in, and he gasped for air, dropping down limply. His eyes shut and his body went still.
I hit my knees next to him, hysterical.
All we could do was wait again because we didn’t know how this was all going to work out.
I prayed he’d be okay under my breath and so did Danny.
There was nothing else we could do right then, so it was really just a waiting game.
