For Alice, it wasn't a decision of whether she had feeling for the Red King, but rather she could function without him in her life, or escape without him by her side. For two and a half years Alice was never alone at night, she spent half her day with the King. If Alice fell down, she knew he would catch her. More importantly, if she said no would he still let her go? Emotion swirlled through Alice, longing to escape, longing to keep the only person that she trusted, and the knowledge that one answer can jeopardize everything.
True to his word the King came at dusk, but Alice did not have the answer yet. Panicked she ran and hid from the King before he could fully manifest. Alice entered into a cave, one legend to show anyone the answer they seek. Once you enter this cave no one can enter or disturb you while it shows the user the answers they seek.
Alice saw a family, friends, people, but no one she recognized. They were having dinner in a white tent. Servants came with food as everybody else conversed with one and other. People looking about Alice age was sneaking off with boys. Then the vision blurred and she saw the King laughing at Alice trying to climb a rock, he forgot to tell her it was the oil rock, a rock that gets more slippery the farther you climb up. The King throwing himself in front of an attack meant for Alice, an attack that would have cut her into three different parts. The King showing her how to swim in the rainbow river. It was amazing to see him shirtless for the first time, muscles that were rocks, but at the time Alice wasn't paying attention. Instead, she was focused on the magnitude of colors coming from the river, black to white, red to blue, green to brown. So different from the boys that she saw in the previous vision. Every second the vision would change. The King pouring medicine into her mouth after Alice ate the wrong fruit. Then back to her family, sitting around laughing at a joke that her father said. It seems her heart was turn in two that even to the point that the cave cannot give her the choice she should make. Or maybe it is because one choice should lead to two very different endings.
Alice walked out of the cave and sat down at its cliff edge, this high up you can tell that the Maze expanded forever. The maze twisted and churned and reformed itself so it was never the same twice. Blood red roses that bloomed everywhere was set to remind the captives who they betrayed in some way or fashion. The roses that drip blood by its thorns, laughing as you passed, pulling your skin until you were out of their reach. A reminder that you were never out of the Red Queen's reach. The thought of never being out of the Red Queen's reach terrified her more than anything this maze could throw at her.
Alice knew what saying no to King would lead her, but where would saying yes lead to? Could she say yes, I love you too, to someone she did not truly love?
