Chapter 1/Part 1

Chapter 1/Part 1

May 09, 2019

Esmeray eyes the young detective as he walks into the interrogation room. She waves at him causing the chains of her cuffs to jingle. "You gonna tell me what's going on here?" He sits slowly down in the chair across from her. Jeez. He's acting so serious. She tries to break the tension with another joke. She raises the cuffs on her wrist making the chains hit the table. "Aren't these a little unnecessary?"

He glares at her across the table. "I am Detective Darcy Bloodhaven. As for your two questions, you are a suspect in multiple crimes, and those cuffs are lined with material to prevent supernatural abilities." Esmeray smiles inwardly. He forgot to mention that they only work on forty percent of the population. He lays pictures of four people out in front of her causing a frown to form on her lips. Darcy lips curl into a smirk at her expression. "Do you know any of these people?"

Esmeray makes eye contact with him. Focusing on his train of thoughts. Anger tipped the edges of her mood after finding out what this was about. "No, I don't know any these people."

Detective Darcy lays photos on top of the others. Each showed Esmeray talking to the people from the photos. "We have evidence suggesting otherwise. These jogging your memory."

Esmeray's anger grows further, but she hides it with a joke. "Well can't always remember every person I bump into will I'm out." She could see his own anger spike.

Darcy slams his hands on to the table leaning over her. "You don't recall nearly talking these people into doing heinous acts." He starts pointing to the pictures. The first being a young man at working at a gas station. "He almost robbed his workplace, but has no memory of doing so." Pointing to a thirty year old woman. "She nearly jumped of the roof of a ten story building however doesn't seem to remember the event." Pointing to a fifty year old man. "He tried to murder his entire family, but is now suffering from memory loss." Pointing to a teenage boy wearing a school uniform. "He walked into his school with a gun, but luckily didn't use. Big surprise when we find out he has no memory of it." Slamming his hands down on the table again. "You were seen near the crime scenes while they were taking place, and talking to the victims at some point during it. How do you explain that?"

Esmeray's anger runs away from, as she slams her own hands against the table leaving a dent in the surface. She mentally curse's. Ramming her face in his. "I didn't hurt those people. Instead of interrogating me, why don't you go look for the real culprit. Or are you detective in name only?" She waves a finger under his crooked nose before he could respond. "Bring your boss in here because I'm sure she's the only one who knows what's really going on here." She turns on her heel looking at the one way window. Tugging the table with her slightly from the handcuffs being attached to it. "What do you say, Ms. Heart? I bet your tech guy could handle himself just fine in their alone." A smile twitched at the edges of her lips.

Ms. Heart smiles at the challenge, and turns to her tech. "I trust you to handle this side. Time to bring in a new line of questioning."

Esmeray sits down with a satisfied huff, as she listens to the seasoned detectives approach. Looking at the flustered Detective Darcy. The mic in his ear buzzing instructions. "Will you tell tech-man that I like his tie?" She smiled at the look of surprise on his face.

Darcy narrows his eyes. "What's the tie look like?"

Esmeray bite her lip to keep from laughing before answering the question. "It's blue with different color sports cars all over it."

Darcy's eyes scan her when the confirmation comes in. "How did you know that?" His eyes darted to the cuffs around her wrist.

Esmeray smiles at him, and his reaction. "Now can't give that away just yet. How about we talk about your socks?"

Darcy's face turns a bright red. "What?!"

She turns to eye the tech guy through the one way window. "He likes to wear wonky socks. He's wearing one bright pink and grey sock with a dark blue and green one. So your not alone on the wanting to stick out thing. He's just to shy to show it." She hears laughter coming from the other side of the glass. The door opens to reveal a petite brown haired women with a serious expression. Esmeray gives her a sideways look. This woman might know what's really going on or at least has an idea. "Hello, Mrs. Heart. What sort of questions do you have for me?"

Ms. Heart sits in the empty chair beside Darcy. "Ones I think you'll be more willing to answer." Straightening her grey vest around her small frame. "I am Chief Detective Ellen Heart, and I will be taking over questioning of Ms. Esmeray Dawn." After following protocol to continue the interview, she places a new set of photos in front of Esmeray. "Tell me your opinion on these photos, Ms. Dawn."

Esmeray examines the photos placed in front of her. The first of the four had a far of picture of her catching a woman falling of a building with a black figure attached to the woman's back. The second photo was shot a block away from a gas station, and showed Esmeray pulling a black figure out of a gas clerk. The third was an overhead shot of her grabbing a dark figure while an old man plunges a knife into her abdomen. The last photo was of a boy with a gun pointing at her, and a black figure pointing a gnarled hand at her over the teenagers shoulder. "Mm. I think I would like to hear your take on it first, Ms. Heart."

The edges of Ellen's lips played with a smile. "I believe you didn't cause these events instead you prevented them from happening. Am I right?"

Esmeray smirks at her. "Clever girl. How did you figure it out?"

Darcy slams his fist on the table. "Bullshit. There is no proof of that."

Ms. Heart glares at him. "Your theory has just as much evidence, and need I remind you who your senior is!" Darcy lips turn into a thin line while she turns to face Esmeray. "I did some digging into your background, and you disappeared of the grid at around age sixteen. You show up four years later working at a grocery. Now at twenty-two you run your own store, all thanks to a book you published. So what happened to you during the time you were gone? Who are the figures you fight in all these instances?"

Esmeray's lips spread in a sad smile. " I would love to tell you, but I physically can't. I can do one thing, but you must promise that besides you that no one else will see." Ms. Heart grimly nods her head. "I need a USB, please."

Ms. Heart whispers into her sleeve. "Mr. Faye, please ask Oron to bring us a USB." She looks back at Esmeray. "Can you at least tell me about the black figures while we wait?"

Esmeray nods her head. "I knew about them before hand, so yes. What I have gathered is that they prey on peoples weaknesses, and use it to possess them. They then force them to act in way they normally wouldn't." She makes eye contact with Ellen. "You’re the first person I've met that can see them, too."

Ms. Heart shakes her head. "I can only see them thanks to these photos. I asked around about it, and no one knows about these things either. However, something tells me that your missing time can give us the answers we seek." A knock comes at the door. "Come in." A young man with bright blonde hair walks into the room.

A smile spread from one ear to the next. "Here you go, boss. I hear your hunch was right." He looks at Esmeray. "Oron Starr, resident super genius."

Ms. Heart glares at the young man. "Get back to work." He hands her a laptop under his arm. "Thank you."

Esmeray jingles the cuffs. "Do you mind taking these off?"

Ms. Heart nods. "Sure. Darcy, get the keys."

Darcy turns his head at her. "No way. Not until we know for sure."

Esmeray flips her wrist, and the cuffs fall off. "It's fine. I just needed the okay."

Darcy eyes her with anger written all over his features. "What the hell are you?"

Esmeray reaches for the USB while a smirk formed on her lips. "Come now, that's impolite to ask in this day and age. Plus shouldn't you be able to tell?" Darcy scuffs. She places the USB between her hands, and focus her energy on it. Filling it with all her memories. Hoping this idea worked. She hands it back to Ellen. "There you go. All the information you could ever need on me. Just hope it recorded those four years as well."

Darcy rolls his eyes. "Why can't you just tell us about it?"

Esmeray smiles at him because it would cause a bad affect on you. "Every time I've tried my words become twisted to prevent me from telling anyone. I was thinking that if it was put in a digital format maybe someone could unjumble it, or it might be unaffected."

Darcy blinks in surprise. "So these people took you than cast a spell on you to prevent you from talking. Looks like they knew you might get caught." He follows that sentence with a lopsided smile.

Esmeray shrugs her shoulders. "Could be possible, don't have any proof though."

Ms. Heart clicks through the information in front of her. "Mm. it does show some corruption on the drives, but I think I know someone that can fix it. Though they seem to be the more important memories, there may be information inside them."

Esmeray flinches. "Please, it's fine. It's really my own problem."

Ms. Heart shakes her head. "Nope, as of now you are working for the station. The black figures in your memories are dangerous, and seeing you’re the only one who can see them. We are going to need your help fighting against them. This world has enough problems after the cataclysm. We don't need to people to find out about an invisible predator that they can't protect themselves from. Darcy will be your partner since he believes your still guilty. He can keep an eye on you, and I'll set up a go to team for you."

Esmeray looks at the woman in shock. "Um, what?" She can't work with these people. They might get hurt or worse killed. Esmeray felt her body run cold with fear at the idea. "No, you can't get involved."

Oron burst into the room. "Got to a hit on one of your weird creatures boss. What you want to do?"

Esmeray pops up. "Where?"

Oron turns to look at her. "Wolfe and Maine."

Esmeray runs past him, and darts from the police station. Wolfe and Maine. That isn't too far from here. She hears Ellen barking out orders. "Bloodhaven, follow her. Moon, get your car to that location. Starr, go with Moon. Faye, get your ass on the cameras. Lets move."

A weird calm takes over Esmeray's senses, as she zeros in on the target. She pumps her feet at top speed. Feeling the pull and release of her lungs, as it pumps in out in steady breaths. A burning sensation passed through her body, as she grew closer to the location. She stops in front of a ten story building looking up at the gaping hole in the side. A man stood engrossed in flames. She focuses on the man's mind. Slipping inside and searching around for information. Supernatural descent is a phoenix. Recently lost his daughter to a train accident. Only ability is fire control. Tier three on the power scale. She cracks a sarcastic smile. "Where are the firefighters when you need them."

Darcy places a hand on her shoulder. "The hell you doing. You can't just rush in with out a plan."

Esmeray smiles at him. "Come on, it's not my first rodeo with these things. Plus he's a tier three phoenix. He don't stand a chance against me."

Darcy crosses his arms. "So what's the plan?"

Esmeray points to the buildings entrance. "I you need to take rescuers inside to search for people who might be stuck in the building. I gonna go after him."

Darcy shakes his head. "Nope, your stuck with me. Where you go, I go."

Esmeray rolls her eyes. "I don’t have time to argue with you."

Oron pops out of sleek, dark blue bug. "What do you need us to do?"

Esmeray points at the rotating doors. "Since, Darcy, won't do it. Will you two make sure there isn't people trapped in the building while I go deal with him."

Oron nods his head blonde hair falling into his boyish face. "Got it, boss."

Esmeray hears the man scream from the hole. She looks up to see him fighting the demon attached to its back. Anger. Fear. Ran through her veins. She saw him start to fall forward towards the edge of the building. She yells at Darcy. "Throw me."

Darcy looks at her questioningly. "What?"

Esmeray repeats the command. "Throw me." Darcy winds his fingers together to make a platform, and she places her feet in them.

He whispers in ear. "Hope you know what your doing."

Esmeray clinches her fist. "Just do it." With all his might he launches her straight up towards the falling man. She reaches out and grabs the black figure on his back, and pulls it out of him. She makes eye contact to a shocked Oron. "Oron!" She sends a image of what she wants to his mind. He nods understanding. She sucks the figure into her being. Feeling a surge of dread as she did. Oron places a concrete block on the edge of the building. She flips her body to place her feet on the surface, and rockets back to the ground. She aims herself at the burning man. Reaching out to catch him. She places her arms under his shoulders and knees. Flipping in midair again so her feet were pointed at the ground. A burst of pain from her back announced the presence of her wings. They sprouted just in time to catch them. Landing gently on the ground next to Darcy.

She lays the man gently down on the ground. Looking at Darcy's stunned face with a smile. "Could you for an ambulance?"

Darcy nods. "Yah, no problem." He flips out his phone to make the call.

Oron runs up beside her. "That was awesome. Also are you okay? You absorbed some pretty nasty dark energy."

Esmeray smiles at his concern. Funny. Not many people would accept what she is. He probably doesn't know. "I'll be fine. Not the worst one I've done that to."

Oron eyes for a second. "You've got demon blood, don't ya?"
