"I guess she doesn't remember that part of the Halloween party."
"And the look on her face, she was scared, of something."
I thought as I lead Kippy through the hallway, into our kitchen.
"I know father wants her out of here by sundown but I need to make sure she is alright before she goes home and I have to escort her home leaving father unattended."
I stop to open the door she pauses for a brief moment before going in.
Closing the door point her towards the table pulling out the chair before she sat down.
"Thank you." She says her face turning a slight red.
Ignoring it "What do you want to eat? I can cook simple dishes if you want."
"I just want toast." She replies.
"Really? I can make you french toast and eggs if wanted." I shot back.
"I'm surprised. I thought she would have wanted something heavier."
"Yes toast is fine." She replied quietly.
I pull the bread out of our small refrigerator.
"How many slices?"
"Three."
I pull out six slices for both of us and put two in the toaster.
"How toasted do you want them?"
"In the middle."
"Got it."
Other than the ticking and hissing of the toaster it was quiet.
"Do you like any TV shows Ren?"
"Not really, I don't really watch TV."
The tinging of the toaster broke the awkwardness of the conversation.
"Here you go I'll put in the rest."
"Thank you."
"Any butter, or jelly?"
"Butter please."
I put the next two pieces in the toaster.
"Ren how do you like the classes at school so far?"
"They are alright. I am doing fine if that is what you are asking."
"Are you feeling any better since you have eaten some?"
"Yes, I am feeling much better thank you."
I look over to see she had eaten the two pieces I gave her.
"She must have been hungry."
Time passes as they both eaten all of the pieces of toast.
"Do you want more?"
"No thanks. I need to get home my parents will be beyond worried at me."
"I can walk you home if you would like."
"I'm fine."
"I insist it is getting dark."
"Alright, if you insist."
The sun starts setting, they both out of Ren's house. She looks around to see if she knows the area.
"We're not that far from my house."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. We go to that general store all the time."
I escorted her to the general store and she insisted on walking the rest of the way herself.
I still followed her from a distance to make sure she got home. I think she knew I was behind her the whole time. She waves at me right as she closed the door behind her. I'm glad she's safe.
Now to get home to father before something happens.
