Sweating bullets and plastering on a fake smile, I quickly smooth down my hair and go to answer the door. I open the door immediately and am greeted by the faces of my three siblings, also donning fake smiles.
"Hi, Psyche!" my older sister says in a sickly sweet voice. "We all missed you so much! Isn't that right guys?" She turns towards my other siblings. They all nod like bobbleheads. It's only been a minute but I'm already tired of these pretenses.
I usher them into the living room, where they all sit down. I get Eros and lead him into the living room with me. I take his hand and proclaim "I'd like for all of you to meet my husband." I smile up at him.
"Hello, lovely to meet you all. Let me just say that your brother is incredible, but I'm sure you already knew that." He ruffles my hair and goes around shaking everybody's hands.
My older sibling smiles primly. "Trust me, we know," they say, failing to keep the resentment out of their voice. This will be fun.
A few minutes later, it's just my siblings and me in the room. "So, how have you guys been?" I ask in an awkward attempt to start a conversation.
"Well, my husband and I just celebrated our 5 year anniversary," my younger brother says, crossing his legs. "I can't believe we've been married 5 years now! Time really flies when you're having fun. And we've had a lot of fun if you know what I mean."
He grins mischievously, and I shudder internally. I did not need that image in my head.
"And here's my big brother Psyche just getting married! It all seems so crazy to me!" He smiles innocently and I smile back, trying to hide my clenched fists.
"Speaking of your husband," my sister starts, "I don't know if he's trustworthy. I mean, he won't reveal what he looks like and you don't even know his name. That doesn't sound like a healthy relationship."
"That's what I thought at first too, but he's actually a really great person: kind, gentle, loving, funny, smart, the works. He's treated me with nothing but respect ever since I arrived here," I explain.
"That may be true, but the oracle said no man would marry you, and here you are married to a male, which means your beloved husband isn't human. He could be a monster!" my sibling cries.
"Yeah," my sister agrees, "Just lulling you into a false sense of security so he can kill and eat you when you least expect it."
As much as I want to disagree with my siblings, they have a point. How am I supposed to trust an invisible nameless non-human?
