Usually on Sundays Bex did nothing but lounge around the house and be a bum. This Sunday however she found herself engrossed in research. Her natural curiosity could not be satiated as she looked into vampires. She reread old vampire novels like Carmilla and Dracula. She watched Vampire shows and movies. She went to vampire fanatic websites. She was obsessed.
“Should we tell her?” Abby asked her brother as they spied on Bex.
Bex currently was eating candy and popcorn as she watched Interview With a Vampire. Her eyes glued to the screen, her hand repeatably shoving handful after handful of popcorn in her mouth.
“Sure, she’s not doing anything plus I wanna see her reaction.”
“Mom said she’d pay us 10 bucks,” Abby smirked.
Nathan and Abby shared a look and smirked at each other before going in.
Bex made herself a den in her room. She was wrapped in a cocoon of blankets her curtains drawn shut. The only light in the room came from the TV. Her room was a total disaster with clothes and books thrown everywhere as she searched this morning for her old copy of Dracula. Beside her on the bed was her snacks and the books Carmilla and Dracula as well as Twilight. Her laptop was open but the screen was dim.
“Hey, sis.” Nathan started.
“Emm.” Bex didn’t peel her eyes from the screen, hardly acknowledging her brother.
“So, how was your date with your girlfriend, Lyssa?” Abby teased.
Bex choked on her popcorn and shot up in bed.
The siblings snickered at her reaction.
“Girlfriend!?” Popcorn fell out of her mouth as she talked.
She quickly grabbed the remote and paused the movie.
“Yeah you know, the one you had sex with yesterday.” Nathan shrugged.
“Sex!” her face went red.
Bex swallowed down her popcorn and looked at the two siblings.
“Lyssa is not my girlfriend,” Bex said.
“That’s not what she told dad on the phone yesterday,” Abby smirked.
“What!” Bex felt her face get redder.
“Just admit it, sis, you are totally busted,” Nathan smirked.
“No I, it’s not, that…”
Bex’s father turned on the room light causing Bex to squint her eyes.
“Whoa, this place is a pig pin.” Abby looked around now with the lights on.
“Get out!” Bex said.
The siblings snickered and ran off to collect their money.
“Dad I can explain, it’s not what you think,” Bex said.
Her dad made a face of discomfort.
“Lyssa and I, we aren’t, I didn’t, it’s all a big misunderstanding.”
He cleared his throat, “At your age, you are going to be feeling all sorts of strange things in your body. Your um, private areas will start to tingle.”
“Dad please stop!” Bex covered her ears.
“You need to hear this talk, with you being sexually active it’s important to--”
“I didn’t sleep with her! She’s not my girlfriend. I swear. It’s all a big misunderstanding.”
“She said that you were sleeping in her bed after the two of you completed strenuous activities.” He made a face.
Bex ran her buttery hand down her face.
“I just want you to know we support you 110%. No matter who you like. And just because you are sleeping with a girl doesn’t mean you shouldn’t practice safe sex. Your mother and I compiled a list of safe sex for lesbians’ resources.” He handed her a list.
“Oh my god.” Bex groaned in horror.
“Just be sure to look over them. It’s always better to be safe than sorry. And I would much appreciate if we got to meet your girlfriend soon. She sounded uh, smart.”
“Are you done yet?”
“We love you baby, and we support you. Just remember that.” He kissed her on the forehead before quickly leaving the room.
Bex faceplanted into her bed. The list of resources still in her hand.
“Urgh! Lyssa!” she screamed into her sheets.
She kicked her feet around in the air before forcing herself to sit up. She looked at the list and frowned before tossing it to the floor. She then got up and slammed her door shut. Her face flaming with embarrassment.
She grabbed her phone, that vampire was going to hear an earful.
Lyssa rested in her home. Laying on her huge king sized bed she held a book in her hands as soft classical music played in the background. She was startled with her phone began to ring interrupting her peaceful state.
She sighed knowing only one person could be calling her.
She sat up, flicked off the music and set her book down. Then she answered.
“Do you need something?” she asked.
“Why did you tell my dad you were my girlfriend!?” Bex shouted.
“What!? I did no such thing.” Lyssa scoffed.
“Well, now they think you are my girlfriend and that we had sex! I just had to sit through the more horrifying sex talk ever! This is all your fault.”
“Sex with you? I’d never.” Lyssa crinkled her nose.
“W-what? Why not?” Bex felt offended.
“What do you mean why not? You are absolutely—”
“You know what I don’t want to know. Because like I would ever have sex with you anyways!” She cut Lyssa off.
“How dare you!” Lyssa herself felt offended.
“Yeah, well… how dare you. Now my parents think I am a lesbian!”
“What’s wrong with being a lesbian?” Lyssa challenged.
“Nothing, besides the fact that I am not one!”
“Could have fooled me.” Lyssa snorted to herself.
“Excuse you?”
“All I am referring to is that you give off a vibe.”
“A vibe?”
“A vibe that makes people think you might be a lesbian.”
“I do not!”
“Do too.”
“Do not!”
“You are annoying me; I am hanging up now.”
“Don’t you hang up on—”
Lyssa hung up.
“Urgh!” Bex tossed her phone to the bed.
Lyssa sighed and tossed her phone to the side before grabbing her book again. She frowned at the pages. Then she closed the book and got up to look in the mirror. She inspected her appearance.
She frowned.
“How dare she insult us.” Her reflection said.
“I agree! I am totally attractive. Anyone would want to have sex with me.” she boosted her confidence.
“Exactly.” Her reflection agreed.
“Humph,” Lyssa huffed and walked over to her book once again opening it to read.
Bex looked in the mirror, butter streaks going down her cheeks.
“I don’t give off a vibe.” She pouted.
She sighed and picked her phone back up calling Joan.
“Hey, what’s up?” Joan answered.
“Do I give off a vibe?” Bex asked.
“A vibe?”
“You know, a... uh, lesbian vibe…”
The line was silent.
“Oh my god, I do!” Bex concluded for her.
“Just a little,” Joan said.
“Oh no! urgh!”
“What is this about?” Joan giggled.
“Long story short my parents think I’m a lesbian!”
“Why?”
“It uh, well, I uh. You see.”
“Just spit it out.”
“Lyssa Norwood. I went over to her house to help her with something. I guess you could say we are sort of friends now. Anyways she answered my phone for me when I was asleep and said something to my parents and now they think that she is my girlfriend and that we had sex! They gave me the talk.”
She listened as Joan choked on her drink.
“Oh my god right? So then I called Lyssa to yell at her and she said I give off a vibe! And I do!” She said dramatically.
“Okay rewind your parents think you are dating Lyssa Norwood?”
“Yes! Not just dating but sleeping with her!”
“Bex, you are a disaster you know that?”
“Joan what am I going to do? This is awful! I don’t want people to think I am dating Lyssa Norwood! I am not even a lesbian, I think…”
“You think?”
“Well I uh, I don’t know. I’ve never really given romance much thought I guess.”
“Well do you think girls are attractive?”
Bex thought about it. She thought about Lyssa and how she thought she was going to kiss her. She thought about Lyssa’s naked body and her soft lips. Her face slowly grew redder and her heart began to speed up.
NO! I can’t think my vampire master is attractive! This is a disaster. Bex thought to herself.
“Hello? Still there?” Joan asked.
“I uh…”
“Oh my god, you do don’t you!”
“No, I mean, I, I, I,”
“You are a lesbian!” Joan concluded.
“Ahh! I don’t know. Maybe? This is all so weird.” Bex covered her red face with her hands.
“Well, at least you got the talk out of the way that way if you do turn out to be one then no harm done.”
“I guess so.” She sighed.
There was a long pause on the line before Joan said,
“I am one too. A lesbian.”
Bex’s eyes went wide.
“You are!?”
“Yep.” She clipped her words.
“How come you never told me?” Bex asked hurt.
There was a long silence.
“Joan?”
“I uh, I never told you because… I uh. I maybe, sort of, like you?”
The silence once again returned.
Bex felt butterflies in her stomach at that. She never thought of Joan romantically but the thought of Joan thinking of her like that made her face go red.
“Please say something,” Joan begged.
“Oh.” Was all Bex could think to say.
She immediately facepalmed after.
“Oh, that it?” Joan sounded disappointed.
“No! I mean like oh! Uh makes sense? I uh, it’s cool. I guess. I mean, urgh!”
Joan giggled as Bex struggled to find the right words.
“Would you want to go on a date sometime?” Joan asked.
“A date!?” Bex’s face turned beet red.
“Yes, a date, a real, actual, date.” She could tell Joan was smirking.
“I uh, I mean. Sure. I guess.” She once again facepalmed.
“Great we can decide when and where at school tomorrow.”
“Right, okay.”
“Awesome, see you tomorrow then.” And with that Joan hung up. Holding the phone to her chest as she let out a big sigh of relief.
Bex set her phone down and then felt the butter on her face begin to sting her eyes. She went to the restroom to wash off her face and hands. Then she stared at her reflection in horror.
I have a date! I have a freaking date with Joan! Oh my god! What do I do? What do I wear? What do I say? how do I act? What if she tries to kiss me!?
Bex quickly went back to her room. She threw off all the vampire stuff from her bed and grabbed the list of resources off the floor. The Tv still on pause. Then she clicked out of all the vampire tabs on her laptop before starting a new search to satisfy her curiosity.
Lyssa sat in her basement reading room now with a new book in hand. She had her legs kicked up on an ottoman and a glass of red liquid beside her. She picked it up without look at it and sipped it as her eyes quickly scanned the page.
The title of the book is Blood bonds and everything you need to know about them.
