"I don't agree that when you love, you are blind or fool. You just get wiser and see clearer what is best and of worth."
-Hark Herald Sarmiento
Yesterday, Emma gave me her number. Now today, Friday, I still haven't texted her. Mostly because I'm not even sure if she can text and second because maybe it's too soon to call.
Today I had lunch again with her. She doesn't eat much, only a few gummy worms. We talked about movies, and our conversations about movies started weird after I asked how she could watch a movie if you can't see.
But then she explained to me that some theaters give special headphone type things that describe in detail what is happening in the movie.
Now it's after school, I'm at Devon's house in his basement with the rest of the boys sharing a blunt.
His mom is out with his sisters shopping or something, I'm a few too many puffs in to remember what he had told me earlier.
I laid on the couch next to Levi as Devon was on the ground and Michael was on a bean bag.
The room was small and the couch I was on was an ugly yellow color with a large black stain on one of the seats and smelt like smoke and dog fur. Let's not forget one of the cushions was dipped in and broken, but I was too high to give a shit.
Thank god there aren't any bugs, I'd rather not have the place I like to lie down on when high infested with bugs.
Our choices of secret places to get high were slim so I didn't mind Devon's basement much, it was better than nothing.
Michael sat alone on a faded hot pink bean bag giggling to himself as he ate some chips.
Levi sat next to me on the broken end of the couch deep in thought.
"I know why you haven't been at lunch," Levi said breaking the short silence we had built. "Really, then why?" I asked doubting he actually knew.
I hadn't bothered to tell them about my lunches with Emma, my time with her although brief felt too personal to share with others.
"You've been hanging out with that blind chick," Levi answered before taking a drag and blowing the smoke in my face.
I coughed, not from the smoke but from the shock that he knew. My loud coughing fit broke Michael and Devon from their high daze enough that now along with Levi they looked at me waiting for my response.
Once I could stop coughing I glanced at each of their faces. Levi's held curiosity, Michael's held bewilderment, and Devon's held interest.
"Well, yeah," I said trying to confirm Levi's statement in the most casual way I could. Really all I felt was panic, how did he know?
Levi shrugged before saying "I guess it's cool but I don't get it." I didn't reply. There wasn't anything that he needs to get other than out of my fucking business.
I shrugged.
"So, why are you suddenly sitting with Emma?" Devon asks as Michael passed him the blunt before taking a long drag. I didn't answer right away. I waited till Devon exhaled and passed me the blunt.
I played with the blunt in my hands before putting it between my lips. "I don't know she intrigues me," I mumbled out before inhaling.
Levi let out a pig like laugh before saying "That's a big word, Danny Boy. I didn't know a word like intrigues would be in your vocabulary." The others all laughed as I simply exhaled the smoke in my lungs before showing Levi my middle finger.
Devon rolled his eyes, which I could see from here have become an off reddish pink color. My eyes are probably the same matching shade of red. "Emma intrigues you? How can she when she can't do anything? She's blind for Christ sake." Levi asked rudely.
I resisted the urge to flip him off again simply for the fact that I'm not high enough yet for me to be okay with being kicked out.
Levi's fucking lucky too. Any other time had he said that in front of me I would have punched the smirk off his face for saying some rude shit like that. But instead, I took another drag before handing the blunt to Michael.
"She's intellectual and affable, unlike you guys," I reply purposely using words I doubt they knew the meaning of well enough to know I was insulting them all.
I laughed and based by their confused clouded looks they are either very high or very confused by what I said. I'll go with both.
They don't question me though as they either nod or murmur a quiet agreement accepting my response.
After a while and in our current state it didn't take long for our conversation to move on to a new topic, which happens to be Mario Kart.
We joked around as Devon managed to turn on his Wii for us to play some games as well as finishing our blunt only to light up another one.
After two rounds of some shit soccer game, we finished the second joint before taking out the pipe to use.
"I'm smoking your ass!" Michael said as he cheered himself on. Levi pouted as he tried to move his player but instead his player ran in circles. "This game is rigged." He complained. "No, you just suck, man." Devon corrected him.
This is how I normally spend my Fridays. With the boys, in Devon's basement getting high and playing games on either Devon's will or playstation.
And for once, I felt kind of bored. After talking about Em, I didn't feel much like sitting here watching Levi complain about losing.
Devon got up and moved over to the mini fridge in the corner of the room and opens it. He pulls out a large bottle of none flavored 'New Amsterdam' vodka.
He probably bought it with his fake ID, we may only be 17, but drugs can age a person enough to look four years older.
Devon twists and opened the cheap clear bottle before taking a swig and passing it to me. I don't even hesitate to take a large gulp of the acid like drink as it burned my throat.
"This is fucking gross," I said as I took another large sip before handing him the bottle back.
Levi and Michael are way too into the game they are playing to pay Devon and I any mind.
Devon took a few large sips before gagging and handing me the bottle again. I could tell he was quickly becoming drunk based on the clumsy way he handed me the bottle and the droopy look of his eyes.
Yep, He is going to feel like crap tomorrow. I wonder how he is going to hide this time from his mom.
"Emma's different." Devon slurred randomly. I looked at him curiously with why he had brought her up once again. "I guess," I said hoping to change the subject.
"She's funny too, well when she isn't being mean," Devon added like I hadn't said anything. "You talk to her?" I ask him wondering how he was right again about her mean comedy.
"Nah, but I dated her cousin Rebecca last year. Rebecca was hot but kind of full of herself. Might ask her out again." Devon slurred tiredly.
"Emma's pretty cool. Even said she would try weed." I replied ignoring everything Devon had muttered about Rebecca and getting back together with her.
Em never said she would smoke but she never said she wouldn't so I took it as her saying she would. I'm sure it won't take much convincing to get her to try it, anyway.
"Oh, I'd love to see that," Devon said as he let out a chuckle before burping. I took a small sip of the vodka before handing it back to him once again. "Maybe, I'll bring her around sometime next week or something," I said as my mind became clouded and blurry.
Maybe, I've had one too many sips of the vodka.
Devon now sat next to me with his eyes shut, probably passed out. I reached out and tapped his nose. Did he always have a nose? Nah, must be new I thought clumsily to myself.
The world was spinning around me. I looked down at my hands. "I'm missing a finger!" I yelled in panic. Michael turned to me and laughed before saying "Man, you have 10 fingers." I quickly slurred back "that's what I mean! I'm missing my eleventh!"
Michael and Levi laughed.
Devon jumped and opened his eyes slowly. "You can bring Emma over on Tuesday." He said tiredly in a slur. Emma? Here? Oh, yeah.
"Yeah, okay." I agreed with a laugh. What I said wasn't funny but I couldn't stop laughing.
All I have to do is convince Her to come here with me on Tuesday, that shouldn't be too hard. Of course, she'll agree, I've got the Fisher charm.
I wonder what Emma would be like stoned... She always wears those stupid big black glasses so I won't be able to see the clouded high look of her eyes, but that doesn't matter much.
I really do wonder what color her eyes are. Even without ever seeing them she is quite pretty. It doesn't even matter that's Emma can't see. I'm not afraid to admit that I've always thought she was pretty. In a different untouchable kind of way.
"I'm going to smoke weed with a blind girl, whoa," Michael muttered to himself in disbelief.
She isn't the blind girl. She's Emma. Emma who happens to be blind. She still a normal person. It's not fair how people talk about and treat her. Then again I guess I'm no different than everyone else.
Before I actually talked to her I saw her just like everyone else does. Like she was different. And, she is. But I didn't treat her like they did. Her difference wasn't bad. It's made her special.
Man, it's must suck being her. Not because she is blind. But because she's treated like either a disease or glass you're afraid to break. I can understand why she hates people. If everyone treated me differently because of a disability I couldn't control I'd hate humanity too. I already hate humanity but if I was blind I'd actually have a reason.
I was so lost in my thoughts I hadn't noticed as Devon turned on some loud music and began to do some weird dance.
Thank god, Emma is blind and will never have to see Devon's bad dancing.
I sighed.
I really need to stop thinking about her. But, I just can't.
There is just something about her.
I don't even care anymore if it's too soon to call as I took out my phone and dialed Emma's number.
It rang twice before she picked up. "Hello?" She asked confused. I didn't know what to say. "Is anyone there?" She asked again. "Oh, ugh... Hi." I slurred out.
There was silence for a moment before she said "Daniel? Is that you?" I laughed for no reason before saying "yeah, it is I." She was silent again before saying "you sound funny." I smiled as I imagined her eyebrows scrunched up in confusion.
"No, you sound funny," I argued even though she didn't. "Are you..." She started to say then whispered "High?" She asked. I laughed again before saying "maybe a little, and tipsy some too." I told her proudly.
"Who are you on the phone with?" Michael asked as he throws a pillow at me, it missed by a lot. I moved the phone from my mouth before saying "Emma." Michael looked at me like I was crazy but didn't comment or respond.
"Why are you calling me?" Emma asked softly as she took a breath. I paused before saying "Because I couldn't stop thinking of you."
She snorted is dismissal before saying "yeah right okay." I smiled before asking "how do mermaids have sex?" Causing Emma to giggle.
"I don't know." She answered. "Have you ever liked imagined what it would be like if you were a dog? And could like lay around all day getting your tummy rubbed. And, like whenever anyone pisses you off you could just shit in their yard?" I asked randomly.
She laughed softly. "Your weird when you're a drunk high mix." She told me. I scoffed "I'm not weird." I tried to convince her. She didn't reply. "Are we friends?" I asked Emma in a whisper.
I wasn't sure why I whispered but I felt anything louder would ruin the moment. She was quiet before whispering back "if you want to be." I smiled before whispering back "I do."
