There was a boy boy saw colors when people spoke. A deep angry red when they were mad. A soft purple for happiness. He never saw grays or whites.
Kai was not seen by anyone, but saw them. He was most interested in the boy who wore grey on the time. Kai finally got up enough courage to talk to him and he walked over to the small boy. "Hi." He said quietly and the boy looked up, shocked.
He had never heard anyone with a gray voice. This boy had a gray voice. It was calming and helped with all the doubts in his mind. "Hey, the freak is talking to another boy." Someone yelled and the boy ran out of the class. Kai watched as he left and grabbed both their bags.
"Wait..." He called out and the boy turned, tears in his eyes. He stumbled and fell, his shirt exposing layers of bruises. He winced in pain and scrambled to his feet. Kai watched as the boy shivered and his skinny frame was what made clothes fall off him. "Don't hurt me." He pleaded and Kai's eyes softened.
"What?? No. No. I just came to give you your bag." He held out the boy's bag and he quickly grabbed it. The boy started walking away, still sniffing. He had a slight limp to him and Kai slowly walked to his side. "Do you need to go to the nurse?" He asked and the boy shook his head.
"No- no." He said his voice shaky. It was weird how the boy that no one saw had a calming affect on him. He walked out to the courtyard and sat in the grass by a tree like he always did. Kai sat next to him and stared at the distance. "You have a nice voice." The boy mumbled and Kai looked at him confused.
"What?" He asked and the boy blushed. "I- I. Never mind." He mumbled and Kai looked at him. He cupped his face making the boy blush even more. "Jack...." He mumbled and the boy blinked. "You know my name?" He asked confused. Kai smiled. "I know everyone's." He replied and let his hands leave Jack's face.
Jack leaned back on the tree. His body seemed calm as he closed his eyes. He smiled, unbeknownst to Jack. The smaller boy cracked and eye open and scooted closer to Kai, leaning his head on Kai's shoulder. Kai blushed as the boy smiled at him.
He crawled onto Kai's lap and kissed him. It was sweet and made Jack forget his dark thoughts. Kai held him day after day. Beating after beating. Jack stared at the moon and called Kai. "Hey babe. What's up?" Kai asked.
"Kai... your voice is gray. I can see colors of people's voices. You are the only one who had a gray one." His breathe hitched as he looked at the pills in his hand and took them. "I l-o...v..e y- y.. ou." Jack finished as Kai started yelling for what was wrong. "Jack, Jack. I love you too." He fell to the floor.
Kai cried and clutched his phone. The call ended as there was a call to 911. Kai sat by his bed, empty and broken. The boy who was his love. Who he cared for was gone. He didn't have him anymore. He just had the words that hit him the hardest. "I won't use my voice." He thought darkly and resolved that until he saw Jack again, his gray voice would not be heard.
