Solara took her hair and brushed through it, keeping her brown locks down for a change. She had been thinking of changing a bit lately and perhaps it was time. This trip could be useful after all. Pulling on a lavender overcoat and putting a purple bow in her hair, she exited her room and proceeded on her way to the town.
It was a short walk to the town, the fresh air and nature refreshing. The garden was beautiful but this had a different vibe to it. As she started entering the outskirts, she waved to the kind people of her kingdom. It was not the first time she had been there. The townspeople loved her. They knew who she was and what she supposedly was by the king’s judgement but she figured that they trusted his decision that she was no threat to them. She was offered an apple and she ate it with glee. Fresh fruit was her favorite. There seemed to be many young men who fancied her but her mind was set on her prince. If she hadn’t fallen in love with him, would she have given them a chance?
The barber shop was small and cozy with a joyful old man running the show. Being interested in hair, she came to watch him occasionally. “Solara! It has been a while. Take a seat. Here to observe again?”
She shook her head. “No, James. Today I would like for you to cut my hair. Rather short at that.”
The man frowned. “Ma’am, you know how short haired women are frowned upon. You will be even more of an outcast.”
“I do not mind. I want a change. Please, I will pay you handsomely.” She pulled out a coin purse that jingled as it moved.
“Very well. A job is a job and I do need the money right now. Sit in the chair. How short would you like to go?”
“My ears please. Just enough to cover them. And leave some in the front.” She smiled at him through the mirror.
“As you wish.” He started the process, cutting her hair as she had told him to. Having never done this type of cut, he was hesitant. But the finished result turned out decent. He examined her in the mirror. “My, I must say, this style suits you well. You may not have issues finding a suitor.”
Her cheeks dusted pink and she laughed. “I am in no search for a man currently. My heart belongs to someone already.”
“The Prince, no? I heard he is betrothed to a princess of another kingdom. You will not be young forever dear Solara.” He smiled gently at the girl.
“I know, James. You did well on my hair. I adore it.” She took out thrice the normal pay and placed it in his hand. “Buy your family a good meal. You deserve it.”
His eyes lit up and he nodded with a bright smile. “As generous as ever, ma’am. Thank you. If I did not know your heart is taken I would ask you to meet my eldest son. I would love a daughter such as you.”
“You are a sweet man. Thank you. I will see you again.” She waved and left, deciding to search for some new clothing accessories.
