Short and sweet. This is how a job is supposed to be done. But this time it was different, and you could tell from the strict silence inside the van; the only sound was coming from the vehicle itself.
Everyone was keeping their heads low, maybe in thought to concentrate or maybe to gather all their strength for the upcoming battle. Among the silence there also hung a sense of nervousness in the air after the van stopped.
One of them took a deep breath before she began to talk, keeping her voice low, but audible. “Are you ready?”
Faint nodding, almost invisible in the dark was coming from the other three.
“Good”, the first said again, “Charlotte, you go with Sergeij and Jonathan and you two will do everything to keep her save, we can’t risk her getting hurt. I will stay back and try to support your backs.”
Right after that, the doors to the van opened with a faint click and the group exited silently, the soft clattering of metal following them. The group found themselves before a tall building, siege-like in size and a tall metal fence surrounding it.
“Let’s look for a gap in the fence”, the first whispered, she had closed her brown trench coat, so it would provide her some protection and that wouldn’t get stuck on anything unnecessarily.
They snuck around the right-hand side of the fence, not a single soul in sight. And indeed, there was a small part of the fence that was broken and tilted up, so that a person would be able to get through.
Jonathan was the first to go through, Charlotte had to pull up her shirt, so that it wouldn’t get caught in the broken fence, the only one who has trouble was Sergeij who, because of his sheer size, nudged the fence just a little bit, but enough to make it rattle.
Everyone sucked in their breath, anticipating another sound, but there was none so they continued.
They were approaching a tall door, there would be no safe way to enter from here.
“Is there a rear entrance?”, Jonathan asked.
“Yes, but it leads into the basement. We shouldn’t risk alerting more people than necessary by going through more floors. Don’t worry, I’ve accounted for this.”
The woman in the trenchcoat, had followed them, but didn’t walk all the way to the others, instead she followed the wall of the building, until she stopped a few feet next to a window.
“I’m going to alert a few of them to come outside. The door’ll be open for us to enter. Get ready.”
Charlotte hurried to hide on the side opposite to the other woman, while Jonathan and Sergeij got into their respective stances.
