I remove the small letter stuck in the fridge, probably written by mom. It was just a fast and simple 'I'll be back. Careful of George'.
George was a huge pitbull dog she decided to adopt a week ago. I wasn't particularly fond of it, actually quite the opposite. I bet our emotions were quite mutual if you count the number of bite marks on my hand. Mom insisted that he was just being playful, but i had my doubts over this.
I turn the letter into a small ball and throw it in the trashcan. I opened the fridge and decided to go with a simple energy bar and an apple. I grabbed the ten dollar bill from the counter and carefully opened the door to witness quite the sight. George was sprayed across the couch, encircled by blood and feathers all around the living room. This little bastard killed one of the crows outside and decided to bring it in. This time it was not my damn responsibility and certainly i woudn't take care of it. I was already being quite late.
I ignored the little 'greeting' growl from George and left, with the sound of the door closing, making him bark out loud. I rolled my eyes and turned my back to the house.
By the time i reached school, everyone had entered the class. I checked my class schedule in my phone, making me groan in annoyance. Great, first hour with the shittiest teacher possible. I had to deal with his dumb sarcastic remarks, not to mention i was tired of answering back just to get detention.
I opened the door carefully, coming face to face with Mr.Gotobed. Yes, no joking, his surname was Gotobed, very promising if you ask me. He really did what he was called and if he didn't threaten with this detention shit i'd actually consider him quite useful. I did suffer from insomnia after all.
'' Oh my what an honor. Mr Degray decided to pay us a visit. Was the bed comfortable?'' He sneered, and his sleep deprived eyes starred holes on me.
''Very much so, tho it couldn't compare with the comfortable paradise the desk turns into during your lessons'' Don't blame me, i couldn't resist poking such an easy to trigger person. You could hear snickers from all around the class, some of them even pretended to applaud me.
''Is that so? Then meet me at the end of school, im sure you'd find an even more 'comfortable paradise' as you organize the school library Mr. Degray'' He mumbled in annoyance, turning his back to me.
I sat on the last desk by the window and opened up my textbook, doodling weird looking figures. Hey, i had actually drawn a rather interesting story, about a city of small humanoid sketches that ran away in desperation trying to escape a bigger looking, obese creature.
It wasn't long before the hour ended, as i picked up my textbooks and exited the classroom, mildly annoyed at the small glares coming in waves from Mr. Gotobed.
I walked through the cafeteria, yelling voices and giggles made me cringe in annoyance. I wasn't in a great mood, and loud sounds just made it worse. Ethan, my best friend (in a way) texted me minutes ago that he wouldn't come until the last hour. 'There won't be any real lessons anyway until tomorrow' he says.
I sighed mentally, moving in between the crowd of students searching for sits.
''Hey Ash, come over'' Yelled a girl with blond, curled hair. I didn't really know her, but im sure she was one of the girls that leeched off Ethan, possibly me too. The thing is i didn't remember her but i guess i couldn't be picky about where i sit in this situation.
I smirked lopsidedly, sitting across the rest of the group on the table. Everyone seemed friendly, in that popular-ish way.
''So, did you hit the gym this summer or is it the tan that makes you look so hot'' She smiled, flattering her eyelashes in sync with her hand that traveled across my arm. I cringed internally, but still letting it pass.
''For God's sake Rose, fucking Ethan wasn't enough, you hungry cunt'' Sneered a girl with blue eyes and black hair on the other side of the table. Rose glared at her playfully, returning her snarky remark ''I smell jealousy all around the room slut''
I rolled my eyes, trying to focus on anything other than the little verbal fight that went on. Instead my mind filled with thoughts on how i'd end up cleaning the mess George made in the house later, giving in to mom's pleads. There was nothing that disgusted me more than touching dead birds. I did like animals, you could say i'm a hopeless cat-person and i guess i wouldn't dislike dogs either if i didn't meet that grumpy little shit.
Hours passed painfully slow, Ethan finally decided to pass by, we talked, i passed him some notes i had other than my doodles and that was all. It was already time to leave, so i grabbed my backpack and started walking to home. Mom was in need of the car, since the place she worked at was pretty far away so i ended up going to school by feet. I knew that i had to earn my car by working. That counted for anything other than food, electricity e.t.c. It was my mom's policy.
I decided to take the deserted path close to Gramp's convenience store, it was at least ten minutes closer than the usual road to home.
I've been walking for at least 20 minutes until i felt like something weird was going on. I couldn't really explain it. At first it was just a harmless feeling in the gut. Nothing more, nothing less. I didn't feel specifically threatened, after all i had taken this path countless times.
To be honest i was usually quite paranoid, it was all thanks to my late father and his drunken 'mistakes', as my mom used to describe them. So yeah, i'm used to checking around my surroundings and in general all aspects in life.
But this time, the sense of weird emptiness in the place, did kinda arouse sense of danger. I didn't know why, it was just a very unsettling feeling.
