The three of us thrashed in his arms yet his grip was firm. Then a second later we were consumed by a blinding light.
"Let go of me!" I yelled the instant the light disappeared, pushing out of the man's loosened grip. "How could you leave her!" I cried, voice cracking as I glared up at the man.
"She knew what she was getting herself into when she took you in," He said, plopping down to the ground. "She isn't weak," he muttered as if trying to convince himself.
My nails dug into my palms and I shifted my glare to the ground. Of course she knew what I am. But she never abandoned me.
"Why, I- I worked so hard to hide it," I said, choking up at the thought. "She should be here. They didn't even want her" the words came out as more of a plea than anything else.
Beside me, Colt staggered to his feet, pulling me in a tight up. "It's not your fault," He said, tightening his grip. "She wouldn't want you to blame yourself."
"She was a fool for taking you in. You should have been trained. Not coddled," He said, staring me down. "You're weak. And she died because of it."
"Shut up!" I screamed. Electricity racing along my body, a pulse of lightning sending Colt flying across the ground.
"Wow. She really wasn't kidding." He mocked. "You have absolutely no control of your power."
"I... I didn't mean to," I muttered, biting my lip as I watched Colt struggle back to his feet.
Why. Why can't I just control my magic like everyone else, I thought, knees giving out as tears welled in my eyes.
"Kal, don't listen to him!" Colt coughed out, voice nearly as ragged as the rest of him. "I'm fine. Don't worry about me," He said, stumbling back to my side.
"Y-you" Amy growled. "You're the reason that they died. You killed them." Her voice was shaky with grief and shock, her mind broken from the loss. Pure hate shined in her eyes, as if she was trying to kill me just with her glare.
She was right. They both were. If I hadn't been there then they wouldn't have gotten hurt. There would have been no reason to even attack a tiny orphanage out in the middle of nowhere. There shouldn't have been.
Lightning pulsed across my body and I felt the world around me dull. Their words echoed in my mind, fear and guilt corrupting as they traveled through my thoughts.
"That's enough!" Colt shouted, the sound of a slap pulling me back to reality.
In front of me, Amy lay crying on the ground, clutching her red cheek. Above her, Colt glared down with a tortured expression. A mix of pity and rage.
It wasn't just me who his family. She had too. They both had.
"It's that farmer boy's fault and nobody else!" He shouted before sitting back on the ground, doing his best to give me a small smile.
Even though it was so clearly fake, wavering on the edge of breaking, it comforted me. I'd seen that smile as long as I could remember. His smile was one of those that just calmed you down the instant you saw it. He used it a lot on the kids back at the orphanage. As if saying "It's okay. You can rely on me".
