Hunter had a headache when she woke up the next morning. She figured her mom would let her stay home. After all, she’d just been on a secret mission of sorts. And her head hurt.
But there was a text from Jasper waiting for her. He was going to school. After everything he’d been through, he was going to school.
It must have all been my imagination. She told herself as she walked down the street. I don’t forget things.
But the nagging feeling wouldn’t go away. How had she known about Tristan’s allergy if they’d just met. Had there been an announcement at school? Had she passed the girl in the halls while she was telling someone else?
Or had they met before?
Pain shot up the back of Hunter’s head and she stumbled into a tree.
“You okay?” A familiar voice asked, putting a hand on her shoulder to steady her. “You look a little pale.”
Hunter managed a smile and turned to Sebastian. “All good.” Then she remembered Sebastian’s ability and dropped the smile. “Just a lot on my mind.”
“Care to share?”
It was just a polite gesture. He already knew what she was thinking.
“What’s that thing where you feel like you’ve done something before?”
“Déjà vu?”
“Yes.” They reached the school doors and Hunter hesitated. “I… don’t get that.”
“But you did?”
Hunter nodded.
Sebastian ran a hand through his hair, an unhappy look on his face. “You probably don’t want to hear this, but… Your brother’s ability is erasing memories…”
“Not mine.” Hunter cut him off. “When we were kids, mom made him swear not to.”
“Okay.” Sebastian smirked and held the door open for her. “Maybe you’re broken?”
Hunter stood frozen at his words. “Don’t even joke.” She managed, pushing past him.
Everyone at school was normal. At least, as normal as a bunch of teenagers with semi-magical powers can be. Hunter sat down in History and immediately lay her head down on her books. Around her, kids snickered. She tuned them out.
Just another day. She told herself. Nothing unusual happened yesterday.
Lucas sat down beside her and slipped a note only her desk. She opened it briefly, scanned it, then passed it back to Lucas, who burned it.
“Lucas is starting fires again!” the kid behind him shouted before jumping out of his seat.
While their teacher tried to calm the class and reprimand Lucas, Hunter ran back in her memory to read the note.
Jasper’s in class like nothing happened. He’s still acting like he doesn’t have control, but don’t worry. He does.
It was reassuring. Everything would go back to normal and they wouldn’t have to worry about what had happened.
