“Wha- What happened?” I whispered, taking a look at my surroundings. The first thing I noticed was that I was naked. Someone had put a blanket over me to cover me up. I stood up and every muscle in my body ached as if i had worked out. As i tried to remember where I had been last I made a sudden realization. I had shifted. The teacher has mentioned that most didn’t realize that the change had occurred. She said that a lot of people experienced blackouts their first time. I sighed with relief and then my curiosity began to build up. Then, as I remembered what had triggered it, I wrapped the blanket around my hips and ran.
Had I hurt him? Had I hurt anyone else? My mind raced as I ran through the forest. I instinctively knew exactly where I was going as my bare feet dug into the soil under my feet. The air was chilly and my nose filled with the smell of wet grass and trees. My heart pounded in my ears as I ran. Once I finally made it out of the forest, I looked around.
People had gathered at the back of the school. I adjusted the thin blanket that had managed to start to slip off and secured it again then started heading to the crowd of people. My friends were the first to greet me. They both looked very excited and started talking at the same time.
“That was so cool. I knew that you would be a wolf!” Oran said”
“How was it? How did it feel?” Matt asked.
One of the teachers walked up and put their hand on my shoulder. He smiled gently to my friends. “Why don’t you two wait a little bit before the questions. I’m sure he needs some rest after his first shift.”
My friends looked guilty and hung their heads slightly.
“Sorry Mr. Green. I guess we just got too excited.” Matt said. He looked up at me and smiled. “We can talk when your better.”
“Thanks guys.” I replied, sighing with relief. I had a lot of questions as well but My body was so worn down all I could think about was sleeping. Mr. Green lead me to the nurse's office and the nurse showed me to a bed. I lay down on the bed and they left me to sleep.
The only thing was, once I was laying down I couldn’t seem to fall asleep. My thoughts were racing and I tried very hard to remember anything after confronting the bully. But thinking about it made my head hurt so instead I thought about what Oran had said. I’m a wolf. A smile came to my lips as I thought about it. The past couple weeks when we were learning about the change, I kept thinking about what I might be. I had thought of a couple possibilities but none of them seemed good to me.
I closed my eyes as I imaged what it might have felt like to run through the forest as a wolf. Seeing the world from a whole different point of view. Then my memories began to flow back as if imagining it triggered the memories.
