We left the store and followed Vi out to the edge of the city. There, spread out was a vast lake surrounded by thick woods.
"Why did you take us out here?" I asked.
Without responding he sat down on the lush grass. Pulling out a small piece of paper, a hexagram drawn onto it.
"Sit." He said, motioning towards the space in front of him. "I'm going to check something with your magic."
So we sat down, a breeze flowing over the waters of the lake, a silence settling over the three of us...
"What the hell are we doing!" I shouted impatiently, hoping to my feet.
Upon my outburst, the piece of paper exploded into flames. The small embers dying out even in the dry grass.
Confused, Colt and I stared at the paper. Virgo struggling to muffle his laughter.
"God that was easy." He said, catching his breath. "That paper was extra sensitive to magic and with your little shout it exploded."
"Why though?" asked Colt, confusion gathering at his brow.
"Most people wouldn't notice but since I can sense magic at a natural pace I could tell." Vi began. "Every time Kal has a little tantrum he unconsciously let out a burst of his magic"
"Well, how do I stop it!" I huffed, impatiently plopping back down.
"You said Iris had you conceal your powers right?" Asked Vi
"Yeah, she didn't want the hunters to catch wind of it," I said, pouting.
"That's probably when this started" stated Vi. "You tried so hard to consciously conceal it that even just the natural flow of magic a person has was halted for you."
Huh.
I stared at him dumbfounded and confused. The lines of Colts brow betraying he felt the same.
"Basically you let your guard down when you get annoyed and that pent up energy is released in one burst" Explained Vi. "If you hadn't exploded a few days ago that little burst might have been much bigger."
"Again, how do I stop it?" I asked, still a bit confused.
"With this," he said with a grin as if waiting for the question to be asked.
From behind him, he grabbed the spear from the weapons shop. A pitch black spear with an amethyst implanted at its base. A unique pattern carved into the shaft. As Vi handed the spear over to me the patterns lit ablaze, a light matching the gem on the blade spread from the ornamental fissures.
"What's going on?" I said, once again confused.
Why the hell do I feel so weak all of a sudden? My arms felt heavy, the spear that had been light as a feather when I first grabbed it now felt like a bar of steel.
"That is going to drain your magic. I want you to keep it on you at all times until you can fight with it comfortably," stated Vi, rising to his feet.
"And you" continued Vi as he tossed the bow he bought to Colt. "This will amplify your magic once you learn how to use it. Keep it with you and I'm sure you will get comfortable with it."
"Now. Let's start the actual lesson" Vi said as he pulled another small piece of paper out of his pocket. With a small touch of light, the piece of paper was swallowed by a puff of smoke. The ball of smoke expanded into a large box before dissipating. With the smoke gone we could see what was left behind. A Chalkboard.
Without missing a beat Vi began to draw on it.
Soon the board had eight circles on it, each a different color.
"As I'm sure you know there are eight fundamental elements. Each person is born with one, leaving out abnormals that is" stated Vi. "Heat, Water, Ice, Light, Wind, Nature, Lightning, and Earth."
Something you might not know about me is that while I am bored to death with any lesson about language, history, geography, whatever it may be. I happen to love magic.
"How do I know which one is mine!" I chirped, like an excited baby bird.
As most stupid questions are received, they just stared at me.
"Kal yours is lightning.." Vi replied, sadly shaking his head.
"Colt I'm sure you know yours is nature. Iris' was heat, and I am able to use light." Continued Vi. "Most people figure out their magic to some extent as they go about their lives."
I just nodded along and tried to absorb as much of the information as I can.
"Now that I know that you at least know that much I want you each to practice your magic here every day for a week." started Vi "Kal I want you to be able to swim with that spear. Colt figure out the bow."
With that Vi walked off, leaving us behind.
At least I hoped...
Without even a minute to soak in the info or to actually understand it Vi returned. While I love hearing about magic my brain also tends to be what some people call slow. "Before I forget, take these!" He called, throwing two I.D. cards at us. "They have your monthly allowance on them so don't lose them!"
Looking at the I.D. card I once again was amazed.
I didn't even know this much money existed in the world. Colt also had a look of shock.
After getting over the initial shock of suddenly being rich we both slid our cards into a back pocket of our jeans.
So by ourselves again, the training begins.
