A bit about the story:
Lucky Wolf is a novel that centres on the tumultuous relationship between the prosperous mystic Eyolf and the noble warrior Yngvar as they journey through the southern half of Norway for the summer solstice of 994. The novel challenges the norms of historical fiction through the highlight of character psychology and social attitudes, the period of Norway's conversion to Christianity providing the backdrop for the exploration of timeless themes like prejudice, social class, appearance, sexuality, freedom and boundaries.
The story is based on historical events – the religious reforms in Norway in the last years of the 10th century during the time of King Olaf Tryggvason and the persecution of magic practitioners described in saga literature – and, in style, it aims at a realistic portrayal of characters and society.
It follows two timelines: half of the story takes place in the "present", 994, following Yngvar and Eyolf, while the other is a series of short episodes from Eyolf's past, follow his transformation “from rags to riches”. The two plots begin as separated in consecutive chapters, and eventually converge.
The title, "Lucky Wolf", is the rough translation of the protagonist's name, Eyolf (Eyjólfr, in Old Norse). It's not his real name, but a by-name he has chosen when he became a mystic and it represents his radical persona and social transformation throughout the years.
