I was trying to pull my friend out of her panic attack. But since I was mute I wasn't really getting anywhere. I've been mute since my sister died in a car crash three years ago. Mia has been my best friend for two years. Most kids avoided me since I never spoke. But Mia just talked so much that I never had to speak. So when she didn't come to school today. I signed myself out of class and went to check on her. I let myself in and found her in the fetal position in the corner of her dad's recording studio.
I searched for her inhaler but it wasn't there. She was barely breathing. I had to calm her down. Fast. What can I do?! I looked at the microphone. Can I do it? Do I have the strength? Mia was shaking badly. I took a deep breath. I've got no choice. She's going to stop breathing soon. I stood up and grabbed the mic. The grip on the mic was white knuckled. I reached up and pulled off my mouth mask. Letting it drop to the floor. I flipped the switch to activate the mic. With one last look at Mia I clenched my fist at my side and started singing her favorite song. Running With The Wolves by Aurora.
"Go row the boat to safer grounds
But don't you know we're stronger now
My heart still beats and my skin still feels
My lungs still breathe, my mind still fears
But we're running out of time (time)
For the echo's in my mind, cry
There's blood on your lies
Disguise opened wide"
Mia stared at me in shock. She's never heard my voice before. My throat ached from the sudden use.
"There is nowhere for you to hide
The hunter's moon is shining
I'm running with the wolves tonight
I'm running with the wolves
I'm running with the wolves tonight
I'm running with the wolves
I'm running with the
Trick or treat, what would it be?
I walk alone, I'm everything"
My clenched fist was bleeding. My nails were cutting into my palm as I forced myself to keep singing. When all I wanted was to crawl back into the comfortable silence. But it was helping Mia.
"My ears can hear and my mouth can speak
My spirit talks, I know my soul believes
But we're running out of time (time)
For the echo's in my mind, cry
There's blood on your lies
Disguise opened wide
There is nowhere for you to hide
The hunter's moon is shining"
It has been so long since I've heard my voice. I don't even remember what it sounded like. It was like a stranger's voice was coming out of me.
"I'm running with the wolves tonight
I'm running with the wolves
I'm running with the wolves tonight
I'm running with the wolves
I'm running with the wolves tonight
I'm running with the wolves
I'm running with the wolves tonight
I'm running with the wolves"
Mia's breathing had returned to normal. The only thing you could hear was the sound of my voice and my blood dripping off of my clenched fist.
"It can cause betrayal it hurts
I can't be dreaming
The night deceives us,
A million voices inside my dreams
My heart is left so incomplete"
I was shaking. It felt like I was running a marathon. But my voice got stronger as I sang.
"I'm running with the wolves
I'm running with the wolves
I'm running with the
I'm running with the
I'm running with the
I'm running with the wolves
I'm running with the wolves tonight
I'm running with the wolves
I'm running with the wolves tonight
I'm running with the wolves
I'm running with the wolves tonight
I'm running with the wolves
I'm running with the wolves tonight
I'm running with the wolves"

When the song was over we just looked at each other. Her voice was shaking as she spook, "Your voice is beautiful...." She stood up slowly, slightly shaking. She wrapped her arm around my waist pulling me against her. She looked down at me lovingly as she brushed a piece of hair back behind my ear. "I'm glad you took that mask off." I tilted my head to ask what she meant. "It let me do this." She forced me to tilt my head up and look her in the eye. Without a word she kissed me. That slow, sweet kiss said more than words ever could.
