A thunderous boom rang in the morning air and the earth shook. Indiana woke with a start, standing up instantaneously. He looked around till he spotted where the noise came from. A little human child was playing with a large rubber ball. Indiana sighed.
Darn humans always make so much noise, he thought to himself. The child was still a good distance away but was slowly inching closer to them. He walked over to Marina and gently shook her to wake her up.
"Wha.. morning already," Marina grumbled, still mostly asleep.
"We have to keep moving, or we'll get squished." He explained. Marina sat up and stretched.
"Oh wow!" she exclaimed as she finally noticed the child in the yard. Indiana rolled his eyes as he put on his hat and belt.
"Come on let's go," he said walking into the grass. Marina slowly rose and followed, not taking her gaze off of the human.
"Aren't you worried about that?" Marina asked pointing at the child, who was still happily, and loudly, playing with its ball.
"Why do you think we're moving?" Indiana retorted, continuing on without so much as a glance towards the person.
"You're surprisingly calm about this," Marina stated nervously.
"Well, I've been out here before you know. Plus I've spent a lot of time researching them." Indiana replied.
"Researched how?" Marina asked.
"I just watch them, that's all. There's nothing to worry about, they won't mind us as long as we keep our distance." He explained. Marina started to relax. "Oh but they do have a cat, so be careful," Indiana warned, further unsettling Marina.
"Log date, 120. Marina and I have traveled many days and nights, trekking thru huge sand dunes,"
"sand in a sandbox."
"rowing in a boat across the great lake,"
"riding in a toy boat across a kiddie pool."
"and facing many fearsome enemies!
"mostly small birds and bugs....actually the bugs were pretty scary."
"Marina! Would you just let me make my own recording!
"sorry, ...actually I'm not sorry at all."
"ugh!"
Indiana stopped his recording and put the recorder away.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to ruin your log date." Marina said, jokingly batting her eyes like a dumb child.
"Whatever, it doesn't matter." Indiana said as he poked the fire they had made with a stick. Night had fallen once again, and the two rested in their makeshift camp. Marina glanced towards the back wall, where they had both come from. It seemed miles away now, they were almost to the end of the yard, the end of the journey. Marina looked back down at the fire, her eyes glazed with thought. Indiana glanced up at her and noticed her staring blankly.
"Is something wrong?" He asked.
"You know it's funny," Marina began, not moving her gaze, "everyone at the nest thought you wouldn't make it. They sent me to look after you, but...you barely even needed me."
"Oh, yea. Everyone thought I was joking when I said I wanted to be an explorer." Indiana stated, "No wonder they'd think I need a babysitter."
"but doesn't it bother you that no one believed in you? That no one thought you were smart enough or strong enough to survive?" Marina blurted her tail twitching angrily.
"Marina? Since when did you care?" Indiana asked.
"I've always cared!" She snapped.
"But I thought you hated me! If you cared so much then why did you treat me so badly?!" Indiana snapped back.
"A few reasons actually. First, it was because I am the oldest, and the oldest has to be the strongest. so I thought that if I acted mean I'd seem a lot stronger than I am. Second, is because that's kinda how I am anyway, I just tend to take it to far. And lastly...I was jealous." Marina explained looking up at him. Indiana's ears pricked, and his eyes widened.
"Wait, jealous of me?" he asked.
"Mmhhm. You were always so brave, almost to the point of stupidity. You never cared what anyone else thought. But as for me, I could only dream of being like that. Never having to worry about other's opinions, never having insecurities and anxiety weigh me down. I was mean to you 'cause I wanted to be like you, But I didn't want to admit it." Mariana replied wrapping her arms around herself in an attempt to comfort herself. Indiana didn't know what to say, he'd always figured Marina was just an evil sister, but instead, she cared about him more than he'd ever known. And even looked up to him. Indiana almost wanted to cry, he felt so bad for all the mean things he'd thought about her.
"I-I'm sorry. I always thought that you hated me and I-" he began but was cut off.
"No I'm sorry, I should have told you sooner. I was just worried about what you'd think of me. But I...I dunno, I guess I shouldn't have worried so much." Marina apologized. Indiana leaned over suddenly and hugged her.
"No, you shouldn't have. I'd never-" he began, quickly realizing, though, that what he was going to say wasn't true. He would've said 'I'd never judge you' but for many years he had. He thought a moment rephrasing his words so it was true. "I'd never think less of you, for what you want, or how you feel. I'm sorry if I ever hurt you." Indiana finished. They pulled away, Marina put her paw on Indiana's her eyes sparkling in the fires glow. they talked and shared long into the night until they couldn't keep their eyes open any longer.
