Alice stood in front of the store and peered into the window to see the rows of donuts, macrons, cakes, and a range of pastries that decorated the counter top. She felt the warm aroma of baked cookies consuming her filling her with greed for those warm gooey delicious cookies and she sighed for she knew her wallet was empty.
She felt a person bump into her back. So she glanced up and saw a women holding a little boys hand.
The child looked at Alice in interest then quickly looked away when he saw the cookies.
The mother quickly pulled her child away and walked along far away from what that mother thought was a urchin child for how could a girl nearly sixteen in a poor person’s dress not be working in a factory.
The woman whispered something to her child that was begging her for cookies and the boy suddenly gasped and looked at Alice. " Can we go away now" the little boy said.
Alice understood the last word the boy uttered what that mother had said about her but the fact of the matter was Alice did not care. When the bell sounded signaling the entrance or the exit of people into or out of the bakery she glanced up in interest.
Then see saw a girl with blonde hair in a school uniform exit the bakery. Alice turned her attention to the girl who just left the shop. Alice tried to guess what the girl had bought by the sweet strawberry smell. Her stomach growled loudly and Alice felt the emptiness in her stomach.
Alice glanced at her watch it was ten-o-one.
"Shit."
She ran.
