“Captain South! Does the department have any clues on the origin of Valkyries!”
“Who are the suspects of the recent killings!”
“Is the increase of the drug Valkyries and the serial killings somehow related!”
"What does the department have to say about the rumors surrounding the vigilante Hades!"
The police captain forced his way through the growing crowd of reporters as they bombarded him with questions, some even have the gull to latch onto his coat sleeves to slow down his march through toward the police station.
Good God, it's no wonder why these people are called 'vultures' Captain South thought to himself after shaking off a particularly stubborn woman. The police commander, Edward J. South, was a 57 year old man with salt and pepper hair, a stocky build, and a permanent look of unamusement.
South had been with the New York City police department since he was 21 years old and had quickly climbed the ranks, but the further up the ladder he rose the less he smiled, the harder it became to see the good in a world so full of anger and death. By the time he had made Captain he had grown serious and his heart had grown heavy.
South marched his way towards the double doors of the police station where two of his officers, Collins and Decker, stood with their batons at the ready and their hands on the door.
“Come on in Sir, the Chief is waiting in his office.” Decker pried open the door as Collins pushed the reporters back.
“Thank you Decker, careful that these vultures don’t pick you clean.” South attempted to joke but his deep frown and heavy gaze made it difficult to laugh. Decker managed a wobbly smile as he ushered South in and let the heavy doors close behind him. South let out a heavy sigh, a common habit for him, and made his way down the long hall and to the elevator where he rode in silence to the fourth floor. As he made his to the elevator he suddenly felt an uncertain churning in his gut that only increased with each step he made.
What could be so important that the Chief demanded I come down so soon? And the fact that he didn’t even bother to try and keep the meeting quiet is certainly not a good sign and to top it all off our little...pest problem has started to make such a stir that its become harder and harder to keep it under wraps. The sudden cold metal of the door knob snapped South out of his thoughts. He didn’t hear any voices on the other side which was either meant something was horribly wrong or perfectly fine, a very fine line when it came to the law enforcement.
South took a deep, slow breath and knocked on the door. A muffled come in came from the other side and he walked in with his hands held behind his back and stood in front of the desk looking down at the man sitting at the desk. The chief of police, Stephan James, was a 60 year old balding black man who looked to be in his forties but fought like he was in his twenties.
“Commander, thank you for coming on such short notice. Please take a seat.” South lowered himself into a plush black chair and crossed his legs and folded his hands in his lap.
“It’s no problem Chief. I assume you called me here to discuss the Valkyries case?”
"Precisely. It has come to my attention that the majority of the bodies as well as any suspicious activity regarding dealers has happened in or near your division so I have decided to make your department the head of this case.” James looked nearly bored when he gave this announcement while South sat straighter than before and resisted the urge to ask the Chief to repeat himself.
“I deeply appreciate your trust in my division, however you have been fully notified of our recent pest problem? This added distraction might make it slightly more difficult to handle such a delicate situation such as this one.” South stated firmly. He wanted to take this case but the pest wouldn’t just make it “slightly more difficult”, it would be damn near impossible.
“I am fully informed of the situation and I understand your concerns, however I am afraid that you don’t have much of a say in this matter. The pest may be troublesome but if utilised correctly, it could be the key to finding who is responsible for the manufacturing of Valkyries. I trust that a man of your experience can handle this, yes?” James tone was sympathetic but underneath South could hear the threat loud and clear.
“Yes Sir, I’ll do everything I can, I’ll need the evidence as well as the autopsy reports of the victims and any other documents regarding the case. I’d prefer to have anything regarding the case in my possession, you can never be to careful after all.” South stated. Chief James nodded his head and rose from his seat.
“I’ll have all evidence and reports sent to your office by tomorrow morning.” James walked to the door but hesitated when he put his hand on the knob.
“By the way Commander, I suggest you stop treating that 'pest' as if he’s someone to fear. He is nothing that can’t be handled and your only giving him more power in the end. No matter what stories you've heard, he is still just a child” South simply nodded his head and gave the Chief a calm “Yes sir.” while remaining seated in the chair.
He waited until the sound of the Chief’s footsteps faded into silence before letting out a long suffering sigh and turning to the sturdy oak wardrobe sitting in the corner of the room. South walked to the closet and rapped on it.
“You can come out now.” South called out with a huff.
“Thank god! It was getting so cramped in there! You would think after spending so much time in the closet before I would be used to it, but yeesh that right there is one tight little space.” A young man sporting silvery blue hair and clothes that looked far too tight to be comfortable burst through the doors and tumbled out of the closet along with several jackets and umbrellas.
“So!” The infamous pest of the NYC police department clapped his hands together and gave a creepy grin. “When do I get to start stabbing things?”
Just a child my ass.
