After a dreadful day of school Sam laid down on his bed and stared at his ceiling. He found himself reminiscing in this oddly familiar feeling of emptiness. He wanted to know if she felt it too, if she felt his feeling of ... loneliness. As he thought more and more he jumped at a conclusion. "She has to remember me, I can't be the only one who remembers. She did it on purpose, I must've made her mad before..." Sam thought.
The doorbell rang, but it didn't phase Sam. He heard the door open and his mother began talking and chuckling loudly, "Sam! Come down for a second!" she yelled.
Sam rose from his bed slightly happy to get a break from his mind and made his way down the stairs. His eyebrows rose with surprise as he saw the woman who lived next door, "Sam! You have grown a lot!" she said.
"You don't remember me do you?" The woman continued.
"No, sorry..." Sam said as he grabbed his neck.
"Oh well, I'm Danielle's Mother, you have to remember her right? You two used to be Inseparable, come on dear, say hello." The woman moved aside.
As the woman moved a girl stepped through the bright sunlight and Sam recognized her immediately. Danielle waved and said, "Hi." as Sam did the same.
Danielle seemed kind of embarrassed, "Did she really not know who I was?" he thought.
Danielle's Mother shoved her, "You two go catch up, I need to talk to Sam's Mom about the bakery."
Sam turned around and walked up the steps and turned into his bedroom while Danielle followed. As soon as they got in the room Danielle began to speak, "Hey, look I did not know it was you, I thought someone else had moved in, you look so different that I--"
Sam interrupted her as he grabbed his neck again, "It's okay... I thought you did it on purpose, so I guess we both assumed wrong."
He pulled out his desk chair and motioned for her to sit as he sat down on his bed. It was silent and felt really awkward between them until Danielle turned and saw a book and immediately jumped up and pulled it out from his book shelf, "Wow I can't believe you still have this..." she looked in amazement.
Sam looked at the cover as she held it, "Green Eggs and Ham..." he whispered to himself.
"You don't remember this book?" Danielle said.
"No, I don't think so."
"Really? I used to call you 'Sam Green Eggs and Ham' because this was my favorite book, wait didn't I give..." Danielle said before she slowly opened the cover and saw her name scribbled in crayon at the bottom of the page.
"Yep... this is the one I gave you before we moved." Danielle dropped the smile as she sat down.
Sam could clearly see the sadness on Danielle's face and tried to lighten the mood, "Well thanks for letting me borrow it, I hope you don't charge some sort of overdue fee or I'm in some serious trouble..." Sam chuckled by himself for a second then stopped, "Sorry" as he cleared his throat.
"Well, you're back now, so we can be friends again... if you want. As long as you don't call me a creep again." Sam said.
Danielle looked up and said, "No promises..." as they both began to laugh.
Danielle's Mother had come over to talk about her new bakery that she was opening. She hoped to convince Sam's Mother to spread the news around to the other moms about the opening date so they could have a 'Gathering for Sweets' as she called it. Before they had moved away Danielle's Mother owned a bakery in the center of town that was booming with customers, but after they moved she rented the place out. She was waiting for the current tenants to move out before she could return and reopen, it just so happened that her old house was up for sale and they could move back in.
As Sam and Danielle continued to talk he began to lose that feeling of emptiness. He knew why, but he didn't like the reason, this feeling of happiness made him feel vulnerable for some reason.
