Gladiators

Prologue

Prologue

Jun 24, 2019

As long as history can track, the Gladiators have always existed. The product of a recessive gene, the Gladiators were warriors, resembling completely ordinary humans with special powers, the strongest of which were comparable with that of gods. In the earliest days, they existed within society, serving purposes such as gathering and hunting. But as those things became slowly more and more pointless, humanity became afraid, as humanity often does in the face of awesome power. The humans slowly developed a test, and finally pushed it out in 2061. This test could determine whether a person was a Gladiator or a regular person. The humans claimed that the test was just to “document who had powers and who didn’t.” However, what the Gladiators didn’t know until taking the test was that those who were discovered to be Gladiators were shipped off to containment facilities worldwide. They were a clever ruse the Humans had come up with to create a separate society for the Gladiators, and figured that the title of Coliseum was appropriate for these facilities.

The rules were simple. Depending on your state of life before you were “found” (captured) you were given more or less Romans. Romans were the currency of this makeshift society, more of a prison. You could use them to decorate your cell, purchase better rations for the day, or use it in Duels. You see, as the humans trapped them into these Coliseums, they set up a system so that the Gladiators would be forced to duel each other for more Romans. Romans controlled almost every single piece of Duels, from what weapons they were allowed to use to channel their powers to the ability to revive themselves if they were defeated in battle. The humans also set up a system so they could watch via a streaming service known simply as Audience. There were different tiers of Audience, and each Gladiator was put into one depending on how many victories they had in duels. A larger tier meant more pay, meaning it was cripplingly difficult to climb in the tiers but it was rewarding to advance.

This lead to a boost in human economy, a rush of black market bets over the success of each competitor in Duels. This also meant the government had to regulate these sorts of bets. This lead to a worldwide governmental principle being put into place. Each country would have a War King or Queen for each of their Coliseums. These people were government-hired Gladiators who would serve as referees for their respective Coliseums. Strong enough to take care of themselves if the battle got out of hand, but dignified enough to be allowed to stay in outside society.

Now, the year is 2084, yet the wound of being tracked down and captured is still fresh. While it is decades later, the Gladiators still duel and fight to stay alive in this brutal society. But, what if someone were identified as a Gladiator, but they had no clue what their power was? This is where our story begins.
