The group marched on, with the soldiers taking the lead. C walked up to Fredrick, where he felt safer. The building stopped shaking prior, so the tension was eased and the fear of debris nullified. The only problem was one directly in front of them; the sludge started to appear again, which meant the inevitable approach of zombies. The soldier's rifles were readied, and C still looked around for a spare. They went through the hospital, room by room, and saw no glimpses of zombies or parasites anywhere. C was struck odd by this, once again expecting an ambush that never came.
The group neared a large room, which appeared to be a waiting room. As they passed through the door, one of the soldiers pointed out the faulty supports as they were crossing under. The top part of the door - and part of the floor above it - crashed down on queue, blocking the way through. The warning allowed ample time for the members of the group to dodge or be pulled out of the way, but not enough time for the group to do so as one.
The group was split in two, and C was on the side closest to the exit, along with Fredrick and six other soldiers. The soldiers tried to pull the rubble out of the way, but it was far too heavy, parts of it being fragments of the hellishly reinforced doors. The section of people behind the blockage started to plan an alternate route, and the group in front had no choice but to keep moving forward.
As the group continued forward, C started to feel a hint of guilt for leaving the others behind. The other group held all of the other civilians and, while it did also have more soldiers, were forced to turn back towards the area of the hospital where C previously heard zombies. Fredrick noticed that C seemed a bit down, but could not think of a proper thing to say to cheer him up. They passed more sludge filled halls, and eventually passed by the corpses of the parasite zombies that were killed prior. C covered his nose, and one of the soldiers reported that they can smell it through their gas mask.
The smell motioned them quickly forwards, with the group soon finding themselves near the metal door. They turned the corner, and soldiers quickly realized that something had gone wrong. The door had closed and locked itself automatically.
"The I.D." One of the soldiers recalled, "Kyle had it, didn't he?"
The soldiers paced around the room, searching for anything else to hoist the door open. One of the soldiers stumbled upon a computer in one of the conjoined rooms, but it was covered in a moderate layer of ooze. The soldier then spotted something amongst the pile of sludge, and motioned the others there. C looked over, and saw a white fabric peeking out of the gunk, potentially a lab coat with another I.D. C felt odd, however, and remembered his thoughts from earlier.
"You guys know why there are lab coats here?" C asked, as the soldiers plucked the coat from the sludge.
"No idea." One of the soldiers answered as they searched the coat, "These are full on scientist coats too."
"Maybe they've been doing experiments incognito in the small town. Explains why this place is so damn big."
The search revealed that the coat had no form of identification at all on it.
"Damn it, it was a spare!" A soldier yelled.
"Looks like we have one last option." Another soldier prompted.
The soldiers looked amongst each other. C suddenly had a lot of questions pop up in his head, but decided to keep quiet to see where they were going. One of the soldiers walked up to the metal door, and placed a charge of some sort on the wall next to it.
"Before the place collapses, you guys should find a place to take cover."
C and the other soldiers scrambled and hid under the desks and tables that hugged the room's walls. The soldier planting the charge quickly ran and did the same. C suddenly felt that keeping quiet was a mistake.
The explosion went off and caused a horrible ringing in C's ears. It took a few second, before he opened his eyes and saw that the ceiling did not cave in. Next to the metal door, C saw a large hole that lead to the other side. The soldiers walked up and started to cleave the wooden splinters from the hole.
"At least we now know the center was more stable than we thought." One of the soldiers said with a laugh.
The trek towards the exit was rather swift and unhindered compared to the obstacles they faced prior. In a few minutes, they came across the exit doors. The soldiers looked outside through the glass doors, and noticed that the parking lot had become infested.
Parasite zombies covered the lot in droves, with about fifty of them wandering the area. C was told to stay back until the zombies were cleared out. The soldiers quickly mowed down the swarm of zombies, and they were then able to go out onto the lot.
The sun shone above in bold contrary to the current situation, and C felt revitalized just being in the outside air again. The group waited for a while, hoping that the other section was able to make it through. The soldiers tried to contact the others through radio, but there was no response. After an hour, the soldiers had to assume that the others were missing in action, and radioed in to the base. The soldiers reported the others as missing in action, and that they have one civilian currently with them. Afterwards, the soldiers got instructions to return to the base as soon as they could, and told C to tag along behind them.
