Michael began making breakfast, the only natural thing he could think of to do at this point. He knew that David had planned to make a special breakfast, as there was bacon in the fridge. Bacon was hardly ever in their fridge because David usually ate it as soon as he bought it.
Michael cracked a few eggs into a large pan and watched as they sizzled. Naomi, and Bear had taken their regular seats at the counter, while Edith refrained from getting comfortable just yet. Michael knew very little about David’s parents, and had only met his older brother and sister during the holidays.
“So, did you ask him?” Naomi asked, propping her head up on her hands and giving Michael a big grin. She had been the one to help Michael pick out the ring to give to David, something that Michael was too nervous to really do on his own. Michael simply looked over from his frying pan and smiled with a thumbs up.
“Ask him what?” Edith butted in, and Michael listened happily as Bear laughed evilly. Michael was glad that Bear was feeling better, even for just a little while. Michael would also have to be very aware of salt for a few days, as to keep from triggering another vision. He knew better than to ask what the vision was about; if Bear had wanted him to know, he would have said so.
“Daddy’s getting married,” Bear looked over at her with the wildest smile on his face. “We’re going to be adopted!” He shouted, pumping his fists in the air.
Bear was right; when Michael and David had spoken about getting married previously, they had also agreed to not just foster their three kids, but to adopt them. Naomi, Bear and Mael came from separate families, but it never really felt like that here. The five of them were one big, happy family.
“The eggs smell like they’re burning, Michael!” David ran into the room just in time to see Michael’s failed attempted to keep eggs from turned black and shriveling up. This wasn’t an alarming thing. Even when knowing that Michael is turning one hundred and thirty four this year, the man still cannot cook.
Michael lifted the pan off of the stove and hurried to scrape the eggs off of the pan and into the garbage. David carried Mael in his arms, and strolled out of the kitchen, where he sat Mael down next to Bear. David walked up to Michael with a smile on his face.
The two seemed to work with an even rhythm as they came close together. David placed his hands on Michael's hips, and brought his face close to Michael’s. Michael had been expecting a kiss, but what he got instead was a scolding.
“Why are you attempting to cook, even though you’ve known for such a long time that the only thing you can’t ruin is microwavable ramen?” David said, his voice soft and sweet, as if trying to sound romantic, but really he was pretty mad about the eggs that were just wasted.
“I thought I’d try to cook something for my fiance,” Michael purred back, pulling David closer to him. David let out a small laugh, loving the sound of that word. Fiance. Before their faces could touch, Edith made a noise that sounded like a cross between a hyena and a choking bird. David was startled, and pulled away from Michael. It was like he had completely forgotten her presence for a few precious moments.
Those precious moments were stripped away, and like a robot, David went straight to the pan and began to redo the eggs. Edith stood in the middle of the room, and what she had just saw was strange, to say in the least.
To her, her child looked extremely happy. And why not enjoy that happiness. There was only one problem with it. Edith was dwelling on the fact that the mate was a vampire. Of course, werewolves and vampires were natural enemies, and Edith had grown up in a time where vampires were very much bad news.
“Do you drink blood?” Edith blurted out, staring directly at Michael. Michael’s face ran even paler than it had been a few moments before. Michael didn’t like to talk about his dietary needs with anyone, even David. He knew though, from experience with David’s siblings, that this was a test.
“Animal blood only. I am careful to stick to smaller animals when possible.” Michael said shyly, looking away. He really did hate it. When people thought vampire, they mostly thought human-killing monster. That wasn’t the case though. Most vampires stuck to a purely animal diet, or in rare occasions, some feed off mates.
“And what of my daughters blood?” Edith inquired. Michael had to translate in his head that when she said daughter, she was really talking about David. The connection wasn’t easy to make, as David was clearly a man now.
“David’s blood stays within his body, Mrs. Olivers,” Michael said coldly, feeling his eyes turn red. Usually his eyes only turned red when he was trying to seem more attractive for David, but this was different. For the first time in a long time, Michael was getting frustrated. Michael wasn’t used to being asked such a rude and judgmental question. He would never do such a thing!
“Dadda’s teeth!” Mael giggled and pointed. Michael felt with his tongue at the two top canines had become long and sharp. A sign that he was truly getting really annoying. David continued cooking, starting to fry the bacon up. He did his best to look completely underwhelmed by what was happening.
Michael panicked. He knew that Edith wasn’t going to change David and his relationship, or do anything that really mattered, but he hated feeling so embarrassed. He had never let his fangs come out like this unless he smelt blood and the instinctual action kicked in. He brought his elbow up to his face as if coughing, and felt his cheeks blush a dark pink.
“Excuse me,” Michael choked out before using his speed to bolt himself upstairs. Something was off, and he knew that his fangs came out for a reason. It wasn’t because Edith was upsetting him, it was something else.
David served the first plate of bacon and eggs to the three kids, who all took from the one plate and started to eat. David was aware of what his mother was doing. A mean trick to try and show the foster kids what vampire was really like. Unfortunately it backfired, because most of them were used to seeing them when they came home with a scrape or something minor like that. David had to assume that Michael was just a little embarrassed this time around.
“I know what you’re trying to do. Don’t meddle like that. If you’re staying here, you should be nice.” David scolded his mother from over his back. David could smell the faint and small trace of blood coming from her hand. She must have poked it with a needle to mess with Michael. It wouldn’t work though.
David reminisced about the days when Mael was so young he’d reach up and play with Michael's fangs, who had to be extra careful not to bite him, of course. David even had a few love bites, but nothing incredibly deep, and especially nothing painful. There was never a time when David had seen him do something dangerous with those fangs, and the children knew it too.
The last egg was finished, and David set it on the plate with the others. He grabbed an empty plate and began to load food onto it. Before he sat down next to Mael, he put his two pointer fingers facing down as if they were fangs, and roared like a dinosaur. Mael giggled happily, grabbing at David’s hands.
“Daddy doesn’t roar, he go woof!” The degrading sound of being reduced to a dog was a little blow to the chest for David, but nonetheless, Mael showed no fear whatsoever. Naomi let out a small laugh, probably knowing that it was semi-insulting to insinuate that a wolf was a dog, but David wouldn’t tell Mael any different.
“That’s right, woof woof!” David patted Mael’s head, and turned to his food. Michael trudge down the stairs, now in complete control of himself. Michael had heard what went on in his absence, and was going to confront Edith, but just not now. Michael walked into the kitchen like nothing happened, grabbing his plate, putting a single egg on it and a ton of bacon. If there was one thing a vampire could eat a lot of, it was meat.
Michael sat down beside David, and kissed him on the cheek before David could say anything.
“Thanks for the meal,” he said, before loading the grease-filled bacon into his mouth. David did the same, knowing that as a wolf, there was nothing better than meat, especially bacon. Naomi was the first to finish, excusing herself from the counter, and setting her dishes in the sink. She glanced down at her phone before grabbing her bag and heading toward the door.
“And where do you think you’re going, young lady?” David had to swallow his mouthful of bacon before looking over at her. She stuck her phone in her back pocket and looked over at David with a pleading look on her face.
“I was just going to go out to town,” She said as innocently sounding as possible. David knew it was nonsense from the look on Bear’s face. He knew exactly what was going on, and wasn’t quite old enough to understand how to lie properly yet.
“Take your grandmother with you, then. Show her the town,” Michael shoveled in a few mouthfuls of meat, something that helped quench his vampiric urges quite a lot. Naomi clearly didn’t like the idea, but nodded.
Naomi reluctantly gestured for Edith to follow her. Edith wasn’t really her grandmother, and Naomi was reluctant to trust a woman who had the attitude of a judgmental politician. Naomi grabbed her keys off the rack by the door, and stuffed her feet into her shoes. Edith followed after her.
“Did you just throw Naomi under the bus so we didn’t have to deal with her?” David looked over at Michael who just smiled.
“Obviously.”
