“Hey Scout, what is that thing you keep injecting in yourself? I see you taking it often.” Alex laughed.
“I started taking this about a year ago. My dad told me to take it weekly or earlier if needed. I got really sick a while back and this stuff helped me get better.” I looked up at Alex who was raising one eye brow. I watched as she faded in and out. “Alex?” I walked closer to her and noticed her finally vanish. “Alex?” I looked around to see only blackness around me. I could hear something in the distance dragging something. I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out. Instead I felt something drip on my nose and glanced up to see still only blackness. I wiped off my nose and looked at the back of my hand to see something red was smeared across it. I felt a few more drops from above and then could hear heavy breathing behind me. I felt my body begin to tremble and I felt it suddenly lung at me.
I woke up suddenly in a heavy sweat. I felt tears rolling down my eyes as I looked around the room. I noticed I was inside a prison cell. I glanced down at my hands to see they were still shaking. I could hear growling from the cell next to me.
“Where am I?” I approached the cell to see no one else in site. I could hear more growling spike up and noticed hands lung out from both cells next to me. I quickly back away. I looked around and noticed nothing in site that could help. I heard a door open then from the large room and looked back out the cell.
“Shut up! Gosh, your all so damn noisy all the time.” It looked to be a young man that looked around Sara and Alex’s age. He had a rifle strapped to his back. He glanced over at me and then paused. “You didn’t turn?” He came closer to the cell, “You seem to be immunized to the whole damn thing.”
“Can you let me out..” I pleaded as the noise around me got louder as they clawed in my direction.
“I can’t. You are the very first person we have seen that didn’t turn into one of those things but you got bitten. We can’t chance you changing in our safe zone. You have to stay here for a little be longer.” He turned around and began to walk out the door again.
“Wait! Please don’t leave me in here with them.” I yelled as I felt tears roll down my eyes.
I heard the door shut and I was left alone with the dead cry’s of the others. I looked down at where I was shot. I noticed it had fully healed leaving a small scar. I gently touched it and then put my hands on my head. “They left me behind.” I mumbled, “They didn’t even look back to try and save me.” I gripped my hair and lowered my head into my knees I had brought up. The floor was cold and stone. The zombies around kept up a consent growl as they reached out towards me. I noticed a few had police outfits on and finally concluded I was in a police station myself. The cells looked similar to what I had seen in crime shows at least. I gently touched the bars and glanced back out the cell to see if anything could help me. I looked at the dead around me and finally noticed one of the females in the cell next to me had a bobby pin in her hair. I took a deep breath and stood up. “If I stay here, they may kill me.” I walked closer to the female and watched as her mouth opened up showing flesh that was in her mouth. I noticed she had two other zombies on both sides of her that were also clawing towards me. I crouched down and watched as they lowered towards me. I quickly stood up and slammed my feet on her hands and removed the bobby pin in her hair. I felt one of the zombies on her side scratch my right arm as I pulled away. I grabbed it and winced in pain. I watched as a few drops of blood dripped to the ground. I removed my shirt quickly and stepped on it as I ripped off one of the sleeves. I put it back on and wrapped my arm with the to stop the bleeding. I watched my eyes refocus for a moment and took a deep breath.
“I need to find my bag soon.” I broke the bobby pin in half and slightly bent one just like I was taught by Alex. I leaned my hands out the cell and felt around for the lock. I found it and quickly jammed the bobby pins in and slightly moved around till I hear a click. I opened the cell and looked both ways. I slowly shut the cell again and walked towards the door I had seen the guy walk in and out of. I put my ears to the door and could hear some people on the other side. I peeked out the door and didn’t see anyone to close. I opened it enough to slip out. I stay against the wall and closed the door behind me. I noticed the voices were coming from down the small hallway I was in. I walked down and leaned around the corner to see a few people walking around and moving supplies.
“Hurry up. We don’t want to unload the supplies at night. We need a few more along the wall.” I noticed an older man who sounded very similar to the Wolf voice from the truck.
I watched as he walked outside and I noticed the truck from earlier outside.
“My bag must be in here.” I thought as I noticed the tuck looked almost empty. I looked down to see my hand was already starting to shake and grabbed it to make it stop. I took a deep breath, “Stay calm.” I mumbled. I scanned the room and finally noticed by the entrance was my backpack. I turned back around and looked at the wall, “How do I get to it?” I wondered. I glanced down at my torn up clothing. I knew I would be noticed in a heart beat if I just walked right out. I felt a burning feeling on my arm where I had been scratched and grabbed it. I grinned my teeth together as I tried not to make a noise.
“Paul, go give the prisoner water. Just a small cup though. Don’t want to waste it on someone who could turn at any moment.” said a women voice.
“Right.” I tensed up as I could hear steps coming closer to where I was. I glanced around to see no other door near me. I was out in the open unless I ran back to the room with the cells, but I knew I would be heard if I did that. As he walked around the side, I waited for him to come fully around the corner and grabbed him. He didn’t seem to notice me till I had pinned him against eth wall. I covered his mouth as he attempted to call out for help.
“Shh, if you make a noise I'll kill you.” I said coldly. I had never actually killed anything, but I knew I had to scare this kid and hoped he didn’t call my bluff. I watched as he nodded his head and I could feel him start to shake from fear. “Give me your clothing.” I demanded as I glanced down at his hoodie and baggy pants. I let go of his hands and took a step backwards and turned slightly away as he removed his clothing. He handed me them and I quickly through them on and hoped he didn’t try to use that as a chance to attack. He didn’t. He seemed to be afraid, “How old are you ?” I asked.
“Thirteen.” he mumbled.
“Wow. You look a lot older.” I stated as I finally understood why he didn’t want to attempt to do anything. “Now I’m going to walk out and you are going to count to five hundred. If you don’t, I will come back and kill you.”
“One....Two...” I heard him start to count as I put up the hood and lowered my head. I walked around the corner.
“Paul, take some of the stray bags to the supplies locker room. We will sort them out later.” I nodded and walked over to my backpack which was near a few other backpacks and picked them up. I glanced around and noticed a small sign that said check in. I guessed that’s where the room would be and walked towards it. No one questioned me, so I assumed I was right. I turned the corner and noticed another hall way. I noticed a few doors in this one and saw supplies written on the door at the end. I walked inside the room and noticed shelves full of different things. I set down all the bags and opened mine. I dug into my bag and pulled out another one of my shots. I noticed my hand shaking even more and tried to focus on holding still as I pointed the needle towards my arm with the cut. I stabbed my hand with the shot and released the chemical into myself. I pulled it out and sat against the wall. I took a few deep breaths and set down the shot. I looked at my hand to see it slowly stopped shaking.
“Hey, you forgot a few bags on the other side. You want to get some...” An older man who burst through the door looked down at me. I still had the hood up, “Hey are you...” I guessed the man must have seen the vile on the floor.
He got in front of me and lowered my hood, “Where is Paul.”
“Counting back in the other hallway.” I said softly asi was still trying to catch my breath. He grabbed my scratched arm. I noticed some of the blood had started to soak through the hood.
“What happened?”
“i was scratched trying to escape.” I laughed as I felt all hope of that coming true fading.
“What did you inject into yourself.” he asked as he picked up the shot.
“Something I have been taking since I was younger. I take it to avoid having episodes.”
He pulled out a gun and pointed it at my head, “You are infected.”
I pushed the gun up, “No, I am immune to the virus ever since this broke out.” he removed his weapon and put it away, “So you are the prisoner, ever was talking about.”
“Sure.” I said as I pulled my bag closer to me. He glanced down at the bag and then at me.
“Do you have more of those shots?”
“A few more.” I mumbled as I heard something move in the back of the room. He turned around and looked also. He stood up and glanced around. I stood up also and put my bag on.
“Anyone else in here?” he asked as we could here something fall tot eh ground creating a loud echo.
We heard no reply and he took a step forward but I stopped him, “Wait. I could feel the hairs on my neck slowly start to rise. “Is there any other doors to this room?” I asked as we heard some more things fall to the ground.
“Just the K9 room that leads to the garage. That room was locked though and we use the garage for some storage.”
“We need to get out of here right now.” I stated as I slowly moved to the door I had entered. The older man did the same. A few more things hit the ground and it seemed like what ever was in here was in the second row away from us. The man darted out the door and shut it behind me. I tensed up and attempted to open it.
“Hey, please open the door. Please!”i cried as ai banged on the door and turned around suddenly to hear a growling. I noticed a dog foaming at the mouth. I leaned slowly over and picked up the used needle I had used.
“Good dog.” I stammered as I attempted to still open the door. It continued to get closer and I felt my heart start to skip beats. I looked to the side and wondered if I could get to the other door. I bolted off to the side and could hear the dog growl as it charged. I slide to the side as I turned the corner and heard the dog slam against the wall as it came around. I noticed another door and saw it was cracked opened. I ran inside and shut the door behind me as I heard the dog on the other side violently attack the door trying to get to me. I could hear more growling as I stood in the room. A red light was above me as I glanced over to see a wall of cages filled with dogs in each one. I noticed one of the cages was completely torn open which I guessed was the dog that was in the other room. I heard whining though towards the back of the room. I walked slowly down the room as the dogs began to attack the cage doors. I got to the end and noticed a German Shepard laying down and perked up when it saw me. I noticed it was extremely thin and seemed to be starving to death. It didn’t seem to be foaming though. I put my hand up on the cage and the dog put its nose against it. I felt it lick my hand then.
“Be good.” I said as I slowly opened the cage. I watched as it stood up slowly and stepped out of the cage. It stretched and began to wag its tail at me. I pet him and noticed a collar around his neck. I bent down and looked at it.
“So you use to be a police dog named Tom.” I watched as his eyes lite up when he heard his name and his tongue hung out. “Good boy.”
