Mary stood nervously in front of the small office building. Barely nineteen and just moved out, he hadn't gotten a chance to relax with all the things changing. Now he was going to his first job interview for his hopefully first job.
He stepped carefully towards the building. Afraid to go inside and meet the boss. Mary took a deep breath, adjusted his tie, then walked up the porch stairs and inside. He stared around a bit surprised at the sight of such a casual place. There were some couches in a small area near the entrance along with a bookshelf just outside the room. Two doors were just down the hall of the house. Mary stood close to the door, fidgeting a little. "H-Hello? I'm here for the... for the job interview?" He called out unsure.
A man soon called back from one of the rooms. "We'll be with you in a second! Take a seat." Mary nodded and sat down on the couch by the window. He stared at the bit of wall that blocked the view of the hallway from where he sat.
"Hey! So you're here for a job?" A boy in a beanie poked his smiling face into the room.
"Yes?" Mary anxiously answered. The boy grinned mischievously and disappeared. He came back with another person wearing a gas mask.
"Welcome to G.L.I.! How about we start the interview?" The one in the beanie asked, still grinning.
"G.L.I.?" Mary tilted his head a bit to the side and gave the beanie wearer a confused look.
"Grove Lake Investigators of course! It's like you don't even know what you're interviewing for" The gas mask one laughed.
Mary stared at them and shook his head. "I-I know what I'm interviewing for!" He frantically answered. He then stared at the ground, his face going a little red. He should have known what it was from the letters.
"You're here for the maid job then!" Beanie said. "With all the bodies we definitely need one!" He smiled ear to ear.
"What?" Mary looked at them wide eyed.
"Of course you must have experience getting rid of the blood if you answered the ad." His smile somehow got bigger.
"You have your own shovel right? It makes things so much easier!" Gas mask added.
"I-I uh didn't- I'm not a-" Mary struggled to say something.
"Charlie, Ginger stop messing with the kid." A man stood just outside the room with crossed arms. He wore an orange fox like mask and a black leather jacket with a green hoodie underneath. "Weren't you just playing video games a second ago?" He sounded tired and a bit done with everything but very calm nonetheless.
"Yeah but we got bored." The Gas mask one shrugged. Mary looked at him and guessed he was Ginger based on his messy orange hair. He looked at the one in the beanie guessing he was Charlie.
"Besides this kid is so easy to freak out!" Charlie laughed. Mary's face went red again as he frowned and looked at the ground.
The man with the fox mask shook his head a bit at them. "Do you plan on staying for the interview." The two nodded happily. "Then sit down on the other couch and stay quiet."
Ginger sat down on the couch and Charlie frowned a little. "Why do you have to take the fun out of things?"
"Letting you and Ginger play video games is taking the fun out of things?" The fox asked skeptically. Charlie didn't respond and flopped down onto the other couch next to Ginger.
The fox turned to look at Mary. "Marilyn Lovelock correct?"
Mary nodded. "Yes sir"
"You can call me Flox" He held a hand out to Mary. Mary cautiously shook it. Flox chuckled a bit. "Relax, I'm not going to mess with you like those two idiots." Charlie and Ginger quietly nodded. Charlie smiled a bit mischievously and the two looked at each other.
Mary nodded quietly. "Yes Flox"
Flox looked at him amused then said. "Let's begin the interview. Why do you want to work here."
Mary looked at the ground. "I..." he tried to think of something better to say then there weren't any other open jobs. "The job seemed... interesting" he looked at Flox for a second then back at the ground.
"Do you know what you're getting into?" Flox looked down at Mary. Mary slowly nodded. "Are sure? We investigate hauntings, monster sightings, and other strange cases. This might seem like a joke to you but it can be dangerous."
"I know, I did a bit of research on the job." Mary sheepishly replied.
Flox gave a small nod. "Alright then, why should I hire you?"
"I'm hardworking, friendly, uh... I'm very..." He shrugs awkwardly. "O-Obedient" Mary frowned and hunched his shoulders while thinking about how terrible an answer that was.
Charlie laughed a little as he and Ginger looked at each other again. It was like they were talking without even speaking. Flox gave them a look then looked back at Mary. "Tell me a little about yourself?"
"I usually go by Mary, I'm nineteen, I... I just moved here a couple blocks down, and um I have four brothers."
Flox was quiet for a minute as he looked at Mary. "Well it was nice to meet you Mary, you've got the job."
Mary smiled and stared amazed. "Really sir- I mean Flox?" Flox gave a small nod and had a bit of a smile in his eyes.
"When can you start working?" He then asked.
"By tomorrow" Mary hurriedly said. He stood up then sat back down feeling a bit dizzy.
Flox watched him amused."You don't have to work on the weekends, how about Monday?"
"Yes" He stopped for a second. "Yes Flox"
"Work starts at eight. You can head home now" Flox stepped back closer to the other couch so he didn't block the way out. Mary gave him a nod, still smiling.
"Thank you, I won't be late" Mary waved bye and headed out the door.
Ginger looked at Flox. "Why did you hire him?" He sounded a little annoyed.
"Sometime I wonder the same thing about you two, just give him a chance." Flox then looked at Charlie. "And be nice, I don't want to see him having a mental breakdown on his first day."
"Okay" Charlie and Ginger said. Charlie rolled his eyes and Ginger crossed his arms.
Flox patted Ginger on the head, making Ginger smile a bit under his mask. Flox then headed back to his room. The two stood up and head back to play video games again then.
