And so, several months had passed... Living on this island isn't easy, but living with Sav made it feel like a home. Images of what happened at the church still haunted me. However, parts of me tried to grasp some measure of peace.
I became much more proficient with the net; the food isn't the best at times. However, I started to lose some of that excess weight. The sunburns began to fade, revealing a somewhat tanned skin. Life became a daily routine. Until one day, the entire island was thrown into chaos.
...
There was no warning that the quake was coming, the first tremble from beneath the earth was minor. I almost didn't feel it happening, but then the second shock hit with a force that threw me to the ground. The forest wailed out in a cacophony of birds and creatures that resided in it. Sav and I were thrown back and forth by the ground that turned to liquid.
The sky cracked with lightning, and the waves hurled towards us; I grabbed Sav and my knife and ran as fast as I could towards the center of the island. Sav wiggled out of my arms and took to the trees. He stopped and guided me through the falling trees.
...
A loud crack entered my ears. A shockwave rattled my bones and sent me flying into a tree. The earth beneath my hands turned into quicksand, flowing like a raging river. It whisked me away from my companion; I reached out to Sav, but he was too far away. He faded into the distance as the quicksand took me deeper into the forest. I struggled to get out, but it was no use. The earth turned to water, and a cataclysmic wave emerged from the tree slamming me in the opposite direction.
I gasped for air as I was thrown around like a rag doll slamming into rocks and trees. After the current died down, I had a chance to breathe finally. "What just happened?" I coughed up water.
I tried to sit-up. However, pain engulfed my entire body. I placed my hand on my side; it was damp and covered with blood. A piece of a shattered tree had pierced my side. I tried to pull it out but cried in pain. "Sav, where are you!!!" I screamed into the forest.
I had only explored a small portion of the island; I had no clue where I was. I tried to stand and grabbed a tree branch for support. Everything was a mess. The trees uprooted, and mud was everywhere. I walked up to a hill, and the forest cleared up. The view would've been magnificent if the island hadn't just suffered a catastrophe.
Two steep mountains split down the middle and a river that ran across the center of the island. "Oh my God,'" I whispered. There was a jagged red line carved hundreds of feet deep into the island. The wind blew in my face, and I sensed a foreboding presence.
Behind me something made a noise, I jumped. "Sav! I am glad you are ok." I winced from the pain. Sav looked at fissure that scared the island, a grim look upon his face.
Sav helped me to my feet, "Sav, I can't get very far." Warm blood trickled down my leg, my vision became blurry. The little monkey looked at my wound and urged me to keep moving.
...
Sav and I stopped at a spring: this one was different. I drank from the water, but it did little to help ease the pain. Sav ran off and came back with some plants. He used his thumb to ground them into the stone and used some of the spring water to make a paste.
Sav looked at me and pulled the tree shard out of my side. I screamed in pain, "Sav, a little warning next time. Ok?" He proceeded to take the paste and apply it to where the tree shard had been. A warm feeling overtook my body, and the pain subsided.
"What is this Sav?" I asked, he ignored the question and continued applying the paste. I looked at my friend, "Thank you." I said. Sav coasted me to my feet, and we walked to our camp.
By nightfall, we arrived at what used to be our camp. The shelter had washed away; the net lay torn and tangled in a nearby tree. I lied down, "Looks like we're gonna have to restart buddy." I felt my side, at least I still have my knife, and I began to drift off — the tides lulling me to sleep.
