Sara glanced down at her phone and noticed it was 5:54. “Why am I even up this early?” She picked up a cereal box and threw it in the cart. I noticed down the ilal was another younger male. He was looking at some of the healthier cereals. Sara looked down at the box she had just picked up and sighed, “Not everyone can afford to be healthy now a days.” Her phone began to vibrate, and she glanced down to see it was her boss. She rolled her eyes, “I am already doing your dry cleaning and getting your coffee. What more do you need?”
She picked it up, “Took you long enough! Are you outside?” Ms. Jasmin seemed to be yelling into the phone.
“No. I am picking up some food before I head over to the office.” Sara replied as she glanced down the ilal again to see the younger male walking towards her.
“You need to get to somewhere safe right now! Those things are ripping people apart as I speak. The building is on lock down and some are barricading the doors.”
“What are you talking about? Is this because I gave your coffee yesterday cold to you? I told you already, the elevator was broken with me inside.”
“Listen to me! Get…” Sara looked down at the phone to see the call had been dropped. She redialed the number and noticed it must have been unplugged or something.
The male passed by and Sara put her phone back into her pocket.
“Bad day for the boss?” He laughed.
“I guess. I don’t know what all that was about. She said people were ripping people apart outside or something. She usually is a serious person.”
“Well it is early in the morning.” He picked up the small coffee he had sitting in the cart. “I know I need mine every morning to function.”
“I understand that. I already had mine at home.”
“Smart thinking. I can’t make coffee to save my life.”
Sara smiled, “It took me a few times myself to get it the way I wanted.”
“Maybe we can meet up and talk later so you can give me some tips to making it at home?”
Sara could feel her face starting to turn red, “Sure.”
He pulled out his phone and handed it over, “Want to put your number in for me?” She took the phone and quickly entered her number in the phone, “Oh, my name is Johnathan, but I go by John.”
Sara glanced up from the phone and handed it back to him, “My name is Sara.” The lights above suddenly went dim and the emergency lights kicked on.
“Well that isn’t good, is it?” John said as he glanced down the ilal. Other women came around the corner and glanced over at us. She turned towards us and bolted in their direction.
Once she got close enough, she stopped and gasped for air, “Come with me.” She whispered, “Someone just came in the store and attacked one of our customers.”
“Are you serious?” Sara replied quickly.
The lady nodded and ran past them. Sara and John looked at one another and followed behind her. They all ran into a small break room and met up with a few more people.
“Quick, barricade the door.” Smith yelled as he glanced over at the door as it shut behind John.
A group of people pushed one of the cabinets in the room in front of the door. Something banged on the door from the other side, causing everyone to jump. Sara noticed that her and John were the only customers inside the room. The other four were all employees. She glanced at the name tags on them and saw the lady that had got them was Carol. Smith, who was her cousin, and Ted and Tim. Two brothers that were Smith’s buddies.
The banging on the other side stopped and everyone could hear heavy breathing coming from the other side.
“That thing wasn’t human. It tore into that customer with no hesitation like an animal.” Smith said as he walked over to a side door that was open in the room, “You can see it on the cameras in here. It was smart enough to attack the power box on the pole. It rammed a car into the pole and flew out. Then it just stands up and ran towards the store.”
“What do we do now?” Carol cried as she sat down in a chair, “It killed a customer and then looked to start to eat them. That is what gave us time to run.” She looked over at Sara, “You guys are lucky that Smith was at the camera’s and told me to check out ilal 13 to get you two.”
Sara hugged Smith tightly, “Thank you.” She cried as she felt her body shake.
Smith put his arms around her, “Family watches over family.”
