As I stood on the roof of my favorite music store, I looked down. There was nobody there. Good, nobody needed to see what happened next. I stepped onto the ledge and thought of everything and everyone I had lost. Of all the misery and pain I had experienced since that night. I thought of my older sister. She was by no means perfect, but she always looked out for us. She didn't deserve to die. I stepped onto the ledge. I thought of my brother who couldn't handle the loss and left without so much as a goodbye. My brother may have been naïve and cocky but I never believed him to be a coward. I thought he was stronger than he proved to be. And then there was my mother. She could've done better. She was an adult. Why did she have to leave? What did I ever do to deserve this? Kaisley, Victoria, and Elijah didn't deserve it. My poor father. I remember the times when he was so cheerful. Now he's just a sad alcoholic. The loss of half his family in one night drove him over the edge. We lost our house and most of our belongings. I lost all my friends. Once they realized I didn't have the money I used to, they left me. I put my left foot into open air. Kaisley, Victoria, Elijah. Their smiling faces flash in my mind. Kaisley, Victoria, Elijah. I could hear them thanking me for the candy I had stolen the night before. Kaisley, Victoria, Elijah. I saw their tear stained faces clinging on to my mother, begging her not to leave. She left anyway. I lifted my hands. I thought of them clinging on to me not to leave. I returned my hands to my side and put my foot back on the ledge. I can't leave them like she did. If it's hard for me, imagine how it is for them. I turned to get off the ledge. And slipped. There was a flash of white before everything went black.
Fen-
"Mom. Mom! I'm fine trust me," I told my mother as I walked to a cool music store I had discovered a couple of weeks ago.
"Are you sure? After this, I could fly back right away," she told me as I crossed the street.
"No. No you don't need to fly back," I pleaded with my mother as I spotted a black cat.
"But Fenny it’s a cut. I need to be there to take care of you."
"Mom. I cut my hand while cooking. I didn't get run over by a car. I'll take good care of it. Can you pass the phone to dad?" I told her. I didn't get what the big deal was. My hand was already healing and the doctor had said there would only be a small scar. I could hear cars in the background. They were probably on their way to another meeting.
"Dad, tell mom I'm fine. It's honestly just a small cut," I told my dad, knowing he would defend me.
"Ok, son. How are you doing in school? You better not be slacking. What about fencing? Are you still going to practice? I paid good money for that." Why is dad always going on and on about money? He has enough of it.
"Yeah dad, I'm still going to practice. And I'm doing fine in school. I have a fencing tournament later today. I'm going to practice. Tell mom I love her bye," I told them spotting the store and a figure on the roof.
"Wait! Son!" But I had already hung up. Why was somebody on the roof? I saw them put their left foot into the air. Were they going to jump? I sped up. They raised their hands. At this point I was running at top speed. I opened the store door and came barreling in.
"Hey! What are you doing?!" The store clerk yelled at me as I climbed the stairs in the back trying to get there in time. I barely heard him. I finally reached the top of the stairs. I pushed open the door and looked to see if I was too late. It was a girl. She put her foot back on the ledge and was slowly turning around. It looked like she had decided not to go through with it. I started walking forward to help her get down. And then she slipped. I reached down into that part of me. The part that gave me power and made me different from everybody else. I felt the shift take over. I could feel my hair losing all it's color and turning white. I could see the flow of time around me, signaling my eyes had also turned pearly white. I raised my hands, seeing the twin stars on my wrists, and started looking at the time line. I touched the image of me running up the stairs towards the door.
I could feel the burn of the new star searing into my skin. It felt like it had appeared on the back of my neck this time. I was running again. I quickly pulled my power back into myself. I checked that the stars on my wrists had disappeared and stopped. I was in front of the door. I pushed it open and hurried outside. She hadn't turned yet. I wasn't too late.
"Don't move!" I shouted at her, wanting to be clear. I moved towards her more. She paused but then began turning despite my words. She slipped. I was close enough that I reached her in time and pulled her back up. We fell backwards onto the cold cement.
"You changed it," she said, "You changed the timeline."
Jevae-
The mysterious boy who had saved me from falling looked up into my eyes in disbelief. I remember it as if it had just happened, slipping and then the darkness. The cold darkness that enveloped me totally. But then I was back on the roof and he was yelling at me not to move.
"What are you talking about?" He questioned, his look of disbelief replaced with a cool calm.
"You know what I'm talking about." I answered not backing down. I got up, realizing I had been on top of him, as I felt my face flush.
"I really don't know what you’re talking about," he responded also getting up and taking a step towards the door. I matched him and also took a step towards the door.
"You, uh, you did something to the timeline!" I shouted at him, knowing I sounded absolutely crazy. A look of surprise flashed across his face, and was gone in barely a second. I noticed it though. I'd gotten pretty good at reading people's facial expressions.
"How did you know?" He inquired of me, smirking, a dangerous look appearing in his eyes.
"I remember it happening. It's like a dream or a memory. What are you?" I questioned in a curious way, looking up. Why are guys always so damn tall?!
"Nobody has ever remembered before. Not even other wielders. What's different about you? Did I do something wrong?" Great. He ignored my question and was mumbling to himself.
"Hello", I waved my hands in front of his face, "did you hear me?"
"Huh? What? Did you say something?" He asked, coming out of his reverie.
"What are you?" I repeated my question a little more forcefully than the first time. He looked quite affronted.
"Wait what? You don't know what I am? Aren't you a wielder?" A look of utter confusion mixed with disbelief appeared on his face. I was the one who should be confused. What the hell is a wielder?! Is this guy on some type of drug? Does he think I'm on the drug?! I decided to voice what I was thinking.
"What's a wielder? If it's someone who is on some new drug, I'm not on it. Are you high right now?" I was concerned now. I might've been the person on the ledge of the roof, about to jump off, but I didn't have an addiction. Should I call the police or an ambulance? What should I do?Fen-
What. The. Actual. Hell. Did this girl just ask if I was on drugs?! Is she?! How could she not know what a wielder was? She felt me change the timeline. She remembers the previous timeline for God's sake. Ok. I'm going to act calmly and get away from here as fast as possible.
"No, I am not on drugs. Forget what I just said. I'm going home. I hope you're okay." I could see the gears turning in her head and quickly turned to leave while she was momentarily distracted. I was suddenly whirled around. She had turned me around. For such a tiny person she was strong.
"Where do you think you're going? I want answers." She looked extremely mad. I tugged my arm out of her grip and began to back away towards the door.
"Look, I don't have the answers you're looking for. I have a fencing tournament later today and need to get going." I quickly turned, evaded her outstretched arms, opened the door and went running down the stairs. As soon as I made it to the bottom of the stairs, I bolted to the front door. I could hear her running from behind me. Heh! She wasn't going to catch me with those short legs. I pulled open the door and ran outside. I paused to look behind me. She had made it to the bottom of the stairs. I turned and started running down the street.
"Wait!" I heard her yell. I looked over my shoulder.; she was at the entrance of the store. I just smirked and kept running.Jevae-
What an asshole! Ugh! The least he could've done was explain. First he spouts all this crap and expects me to understand. Then when I try to question him he bolts. Seriously why are people so cagey these days whenever they get questioned? I turned to apologize to the clerk and quickly left the store before he said anything. As I walked on the sidewalk, I thought about what I had almost done. Looking back at it now, it seems like such a foolish decision. I realized where I was. I turned and looked into the window of one of the many TV stores and saw the time. Crap! It was 7:25. First period started in 20 minutes. I took off at a sprint, hoping to make it there in time.
