Fen-
I woke up around midnight to my dishwasher turning on automatically. I was stiff and cold from sleeping on the couch, not to mention hungry. I walked into the kitchen and opened up the fridge. All I had was some leftover pizza and a can of pepsi. I put the pizza in the microwave and popped open the soda. The microwave beeped. As I moved to the microwave, I stumbled into the counter. Weird, why was my body vibrating? I gasped as I realized I wasn’t the one vibrating, it was the building! I threw myself under the counter and waited for the earthquake to stop. The vibrating stopped and I got up again. My pizza was probably cold by now. Just as I went to open the microwave, I was launched back into the hallway of my apartment.
Everything was ringing. When I woke up, there were spots in my vision. Then I noticed the giant hole in my wall. That was going to cost a pretty penny. I walked to the edge of the hole, expecting to see ambulances and firefighters outside. There was nothing of the sort. After I looked around for a bit, I heard a blood curdling scream. I sprinted to the door and tried to get it open. It seemed something was blocking it. I finally decided to just kick the door down. By the time it was down I was so surprised, I actually took a step back and tripped over the door. A fiery little spit ball from the academy named Lorelei Xeno was fighting a Zli čovjek. There was a protective sphere in the color purple that it looked like she was protecting. There was only one person who had an aura of that nature. Thomas French was in the building. Why was the dynamic duo here? I looked to the left, expecting to see French fighting a Gavran, which are usually the pets of Zli ljudi. What I saw stunned me. Jevae, injured and bloody, and French trying to help her. French let go of Jevae and she immediately began to stumble. What an idiot. He shouldn’t have let her go when she was so off kilter. Any rookie could see her leg was injured. I sprinted towards Jevae and caught her just as she was about to fall to the ground. French glared at me before running off to fight the Gavran, which had finally decided to show it’s true face, in the form of a woman. Jevae turned around and returned the hug. Before I fully registered what was happening, Jevae was crying into my shoulder. I held her in my arms for what felt like an eternity. I didn’t want it to end. But it did. A tremble shook the building and Jevae ended the hug. I immediately felt her absence. She turned to see French fighting the Gavran.
“No!” I spun around the same time Jevae did to see Xeno sprinting towards the protective orb. The Zli čovjek was faster than her though. It hit the top of the protective sphere and out fell Jevae’s siblings. She immediately went walking towards them, ignoring the danger. I pulled her back, just as I pulled out my power. I would need it to defeat this Zli čovjek. When her eyes met mine, now milky white, I looked away, disgusted with myself. Disgusted with my power. I expected her to jerk her hand out of mine and begin to tremble in fear, instead she pressed her soft and warm lips to my cheek. Jevae moved to stand behind me. I was so stunned I didn’t even blush. I just went to fight the Zli. I sensed that Jevae had ran to her siblings side. When we were near the edge of the building, the duel, if you can even call it that began. The Zli was at an advantage both with it being night and with the fact that he had a weapon, a Dugi nož, while I had nothing. It lunged at me and I sidestepped. Right off the building. I was about to turn back time when I realized that if I did, Jevae’s reaction to my power might be different. Before I had decided what to do, a figure was barreling towards me. It was Jevae. She had jumped off the building. What a literal idiot. I reached my arms up to catch her just as she exploded.
Jevae-
Fen was reaching out to me. I started to reach out to when I realized, what would I do when I entered his embrace? I was powerless. I could do nothing. Just as my anger at myself grew to a boiling point, something inside me snapped. I let it all out. I wanted to save Fen. I wanted to protect my siblings. I wanted to help Thomas and the fire cracker. I wanted to be me. I closed my eyes as a light glowed out from what seemed to be me. My injuries were gone. My ankle no longer ached and I could see better than ever before. Then I realized I wasn’t falling anymore. I was flying. I moved back and forth. With a single thought, I could touch the sky. I looked down and Fen was still falling. I wanted, more than I ever wanted anything before, for Fen to be beside me. And then he was. He floated up until we were eye level. I threw my hands around his neck and waited for him to wrap his hands around my waist. When he did, I willed us to go back up, to the opening in the building. I stopped hugging Fen and instead just held his hand. What I saw had me screaming. The pizza guy had his
hands around Elijah. I sprinted forward with the speed of a cheetah. When I got their, the spot where the pizza guy had been was singed. I looked to the right and Victoria was holding fire in her palms. I didn’t question it. I could apparently fly! I bent down to make sure Elijah and then the rest were safe. In the process of all this, my hand had escaped Fen’s. I whipped around, expecting him to be standing behind me. He had his hands around pizza guy’s throat and his hair was whiter than ever. At closer inspection, pizza guy was getting older. Fen was taking pizza guy’s time away. I walked up behind Fen and place a hand on his shoulder.
“He’s not worth it,” I whispered for his ears only. He let go and wrapped an arm around my waist. I led him back to where my siblings were.
Victoria was holding Elijah and sobbing softly. Kaisley had her arms around both of them. I walked up behind them and joined the embrace. When I noticed Fen was just standing there awkwardly, I pulled him down to join the hug. He protested at first but eventually gave in to my unending stubbornness. I heard footsteps coming up behind us and got up, breaking the embrace. I stood in front of my siblings, planning on protecting them from the incoming threat. It ended up just being Thomas and the red-head. I was still on guard, considering the abilities I had witnessed the two display. The red-head's hand shot out as if to punch Fen and before I knew what was going on, I had her arm twisted behind her back and I was growling soft threats in her ear. She expertly got out of my hold and shoved me. Fen caught me and held me back, seeing that I was ready to throw her off the building. She was throwing me dirty glares when Thomas decided to speak."You already know who I am but I'll introduce myself again in case you forgot. I'm Thomas French." He stuck out his hand, expecting me to shake it. I did, reluctantly. I didn't have a problem with Thomas.
"Xeno. Lorelei Xeno," the red-head said. She didn't even offer her hand. I wouldn't have shaken it anyway.
"Jevae Fawks," I said and then introduced my siblings as well.
"We know who you are. We were sent her to bring you back to the Academy," Thomas stated. I just accepted it. I didn't even protest. This day was getting to be too much. I nodded and then rested my head against Fen's shoulder.
"How do you know him?" Lorelei nodded in Fen's direction.
Fen answered before I could, "We met at school and got to know each other." I was glad he didn't mention the almost suicide. He was the only person who knew about that. Lorelei nodded, though I could see she wasn't convinced.
"You want to take down barrier Thomas?" Lorelei said to Thomas. He started making this weird arm movements and then we were in the hallway. There was no hole in the wall or debris.
"Huh?" was all I could say.
"I set up this barrier from the outside world so we could fight without harming and innocents." I just nodded and mumbled an incoherent "ok".
I turned around and stepped out of Fen's embrace to help my siblings stand up. They hadn't said anything so I was a little worried. I decided not to press them. There would be time for questions and explanations later.
"We should start on our way to the Academy. Get what you need and nothing more. Pack little. Are you coming with us Cynth?" Lorelei said. I was starting to not like her very much. I looked towards Fen to see what he would say.
"Obviously," was all he said before he made to go to his apartment. He threw me a reassuring smile before closing the door behind him. I made my way to Ms. Sage's apartment with my siblings in tow.
Fen-
As I closed my door behind me, I slid down to the ground and put my head in my hands. I thought about everything that had happened. Jevae accepted me. More than once. She stopped from killing. She saved me life. She brought me into her protection. Hell. She made an enemy of Lorelei Xeno for me. I started cracking up as I remembered Xeno's face as a rookie got the best of her. I realized cold I was when I started rubbing my hands over my arms. I missed Jevae's embrace I decided to get ready as fast as possible so I could get back to her. I went straight to my closet and pressed in the code for my wielder gear. I threw on black jeans, sneakers, a jacket, and a prepacked bag full of an assortment of things. I zipped up my jacket and exited my apartment. I locked the door behind me, knowing I wouldn't be back for a while. I walked to Ms. Sage's apartment and just went in. The door was wide open anyway. I walked to the only room with a light on and went in without knocking. There was Jevae without a shirt on. I could feel the blush creeping in to my face as I realized what had happened.
"FEN!" Jevae screeched as she realized I was there. I looked up to meet her eyes and saw the blush on her own face. I closed the door quickly and heard a thud. She must have thrown something at me. I groaned inwardly and went to go sit in the living room.
Jevae-
My siblings and I made a beeline to our room, trying to be as quiet as possible. I decided to answer their questions now because I knew it was going to be a while before we had some alone time again. Victoria spoke first.
"Fire came out of my hands." Her lip trembled as she made the statement.
"Well, I jumped off a building and flew so there's that." She started laughing and then we all did too.
"What are we going to do now?" Elijah asked.
"We are going to listen to Jevae. Our world is different now so we have to take it one step at a time," Kaisley answered. I couldn't have said it better myself.
"Let's get ready," I told them. They went into the bathroom to get tooth brushes, hair brushes, etc. I had taken off my shirt and was looking for one to change into, when the door opened. I thought it was one of my siblings but when they didn't move, I looked up to see who it was. There was Fen with his mouth slightly open and as red as a tomato. I shouted at him and then threw a pillow at him, just as he closed the door. I didn't stop blushing until I changed into a black tank top, black jeans, and black timberlands. I threw on my red cloak. It was as beautiful as ever. I braided my hair, placed the brooches in, and started packing our bags. I only packed a few changes of clothes, the earrings and necklace, and my journal. When my siblings came back from the bathroom, they got changed in a similar fashion. Each wore what they had taken of mother's.
"Fen's in the living room," Victoria said while Kaisley made a kissy face. I threw the same pillow I had thrown at Fen at them and exited the room. I walked to the living and sat next to Fen on the couch.
"Aren't you going to ask me?" he said, his fast cast in shadowing, making it impossible to read his expression.
"Ask you what?" I said, confusion conveyed in my tone.
"W, What I am?" he stuttered. It dawned on me what he was talking about.
"You'll tell me when your ready," I responded coolly. I wouldn't want anyone to press me on something that made me distraught as it was obviously making him distraught. He looked at me with surprise and wonder on his features. Just as he was going to respond, my siblings entered the room. Victoria walked right up to Fen and stuck out her hand. Fen rose, as did I.
"Are you Jevae's boyfriend?" she asked as she shook his hand. I choked and by Fen's silence I guess he did too.
"No," he said slowly. Almost like a question. I was bit disappointed but he wasn't my boyfriend so I don't know why. At that moment, Thomas and Lorelei came in.
"You ready to go?" Thomas asked. When we all nodded he led us back into the living room.
"Are we going now?" I asked. I had realized we hadn't left a note for Ms. Sage or dad.
"Yes," Lorelei responded.
"Should we leave a note for our guardian?" I asked. I had no idea what kind of note I would leave.
"All of that will be taken care of by the Academy," responded Fen. I let out a breath I was holding in and reached for Fen's hand. He took it and gave it a gentle squeeze.
"All right. Form a circle and hold hands. Don't think about anything and try not to throw up," Thomas said. We did as we were told and made a circle. Thomas started chanting and before I knew it, it was like we were floating threw a vortex of air. We were spewed out. Basically the earth spit us out. I didn't have time to gather my bearings before a figure appeared and a large castle-like building rose out of seemingly nowhere.
"Welcome to Wielder Academy!"
