“What the heck!” Tim yelled as everyone stared at John. He stared at Carols body as he lowered the pistol that he had pulled out of the back of his jeans.
“She was going to turn. They are easier to fight before they turn then after.”
“This isn’t some kind of game!” Smith yelled as he leaned down towards Carols body, “You just murdered someone.”
“I saved all of us. You will thank me later when you fully understand what is going on.”
“Like you fully understand! This has never happened before.”
“A few days ago, a patient came into the hospital with a bite. They were over heating like your friend here. Their eyes were desolated and the glands inside their mouth was going crazy. They suddenly went into a seizer and stopped after a few seconds. We had deemed them dead. After a minute went by, the body woke up and attacked one of the nurses that was in charge of cleaning. She was bite and the same thing happened to her. We ended up strapping her down to the bed. She was no longer there. We brought in her family, friends, and even her dog. She only reacted aggressive towards all of them as though she saw them only as food.”
“Why didn’t this make the news?” Smith replied as he stood back up and stepped closer to John.
“We didn’t want to create a panic till we understood what was actually going on. It seems like it spread though quickly. Unless you don’t want to die, you will trust me. This is not a safe location. Especially now that we have a body that has the virus in the room with us.”
He looked over at Sara who seemed to be paralyzed in fear as she stared down at Carols body.
“I had to do what was best for everyone.”
“I say we go to his place.” Ted said as he looked towards the door, “He has a point. We can’t stay in a room with someone who had the virus in them.”
Tim looked over at Smith, “We can always just take the body out of the room.”
Smith glanced over at Sara and then back over at John, “We have a backdoor that is right next to this room. How long is the walk to your place, from here?”
“Ten minutes max.” John replied, “The apartment building needs a pass to even get into, so we shouldn’t have to worry about any inside.”
“Sara.” Smith walked over to Sara and put his hand on her shoulders, “We need to leave.”
“He killed her after she said she didn’t want to die.” Sara mumbled.
John took a step closer to her and she glanced up from Carols body, “She was going to suffer if you didn’t do that right?”
“She would have gone into a seizer soon.” Sara turned around and looked at the door.
“We should go while there are still some shadows from the morning to hid in. If we wait much longer, we will have to travel in the light.” Sara replied as she walked over to the door, “Tim, help me move this.”
Sara got behind the dresser and Tim continued to just stare at her. He glanced over at Smith and John.
“We should use the cameras to make sure we know what’s on the other side of the door.” Smith replied.
Sara began to sink to the ground as she began to cry, “I can’t stay in this room much longer though.”
Smith looked at John, “Go check the cameras and tell us if we are good to roll.” Smith walked over to Sara and leaned down to her. He began to rub her back, “It’s going to be okay.”
John walked in the camera room with Ted and Tim.
“I should be at work right now. I had to run to the dry cleaners next to this store and instead of heading directly over after I dropped off the clothing, I wanted to get some food.”
“Take a deep breath. I am here for you. Family has to stay together. This John guy seems sketchy but if he is telling the truth about what happened a few days ago, he just protected all of us. “
“I didn’t even see he had a gun.” Sara stammered, “Just like before.”
“Don’t think about the past. I need you to stay calm and stay near me as we travel to this guy’s place. When he pulled out that gun, I finally understood what he meant. This store is surrounded by many apartments. When people run out of food, they will start to look for more. This store will be on most their minds and many will come with weapons and maybe kill for just a small can of food.”
“Do you think that this will last that long?”
“I don’t know, but I don’t want to risk it. There are four of us against one of him, if he does do anything.” He pulled out his keys and pulled off a small bear that was attached to it, “Remember when you gave me this bear a few years ago. You told me that it would watch over me after my Mom passed. It gave me luck at getting a job, getting a place to stay, and a car. Now it’s time for you to hold on to this for a while for good luck. As long as you hold on to this, everything will be fine.” Sara grabbed the small bear from him and moved it around in her hands. She noticed a few stains on it.
She smiled, “Thank you.”
