Brewing
[ˈbro͞oiNG]
Verb
1. (of an unwelcome event or situation) begin to develop
“The storm was brewing ominously in the sky.”

Keir shivered as he stepped onto the field, yellowish grass crunching slightly beneath his feet. Why Nyx had wanted to meet him out here of all places was completely beyond him. Was the blond not aware of how fucking cold it was outside? Maybe he wanted him to freeze to death. The asshole.

He was angry that Nyx knew about his dream last night. How he had even managed to invade his dreams was completely beyond Keir. He really only practiced light magic and knew nothing about dream walking or even telepathy. Magical ability was genetic, and telepaths had never existed in his family, as far as he knew. Not to mention that it was completely embarrassing. How was he going to look Nyx in the eyes now? Just the thought of knowing that Nyx knew about hos dream made him blush furiously. This meeting was going to be a complete disaster.

After pacing around for a good ten minutes, trying to ignore how cold he was, he began wondering if Nyx had ditched him. Why wouldn’t he have? He was gay and had creepy dreams about him. Keir wouldn’t want to talk to himself either. He huffed; breath visible as he looked around the empty football field. He should just leave. Obviously, Nyx wasn’t going to show up and any chances of him finding out what he was was out of the window.

He was just about to begin the trek back to his car when a figure stepped onto the field. They had their hood up and he got a glance of the Supreme logo on their hoodie before something slammed into his chest, knocking him flat on his back. He let out a yelp, trying to sit up, but to no avail. Something was holding him down. Panic washed over him and he lifted his head to look at his chest. A wispy, shadow-like substance was keeping him down, and it had spread to his wrists and ankles, effectively keeping him from standing up.

He shut his eyes, trying to keep his breathing even. Shadow magic? He’d never met anyone who could use shadow magic before, except for maybe Silas. Was the kid here now? That didn’t make any sense. How could Silas know that he was here? Unless Nyx had told him so that Silas could attack him again. Maybe they were going to start bullying him for being gay. That would be just his luck.

He opened his eyes as a scuttling noise filled his ears, coming from all directions. He looked around as best as he could, seeing multiple things scampering through the grass. His stopped breathing as he saw multiple flashes of white through the dead grass. Whatever they were, they heading towards him. He screamed as the first jumped onto his chest. The creature was a dirty off-white color and it didn’t have fur. No, whatever this thing was had been was long gone, leaving nothing but bone behind. He was looking at the skeleton of probably a field mouse. It seemed to regard him, looking at him through the sockets that used to hold its eyes.

He screamed, flailing in an attempt to get the creepy thing off of him. What was happening? He shut his eyes as he felt more of the things running around on top of him, across his torso, legs, and arms. Nausea washed over him in a wave. He hated mice with passion. As he struggled, he felt the familiar pull in his gut, his magic finally getting to work to save him. He didn’t care what happened as long as it got him out of this situation.

Keir could feel clouds forming in the pale autumn sky that hadn’t been there previously. He could feel how dark and heavy they were, full of rain as they rolled over the top of the school’s football field. He could feel the friction as it built up, the energy coursing through the clouds as it became too much. He felt the lightning as it raced towards the earth, straight to where he was laying in the grassy field.

Great, he thought, now I’m dead for sure.

As the lightning struck him, however, it became like a blanket. It wrapped itself around him, crackling and moving, warding off the shadows that had clung to him only moments before. The smell of ozone hit his nose and a warm feeling washing over him, almost like the lightning was an affectionate pet.

Before he could dwell too much on the fact that he wasn’t dead, he jumped up, spinning around to look at his attacker. The lightning had wrapped around him like armor, and he had to admit, it was cool as shit. He found himself staring into Nyx’s eyes that were wide with shock. Shadows wrapped around Nyx’s hands, the little skeletal mice dancing around his feet.

“What the fuck?!” Keir yelled, electricity crackling dangerously as his anger spiked. Why would Nyx attack him for no reason? Especially without even giving him time to prepare first! That was just messed up. He stalked toward the blond, having half a mind to smite him with his newfound powers.

Nyx took a step back, eyeing Keir warily. “Hey, let’s talk about this, yeah?” He seemed to take a small step to the side, before disappearing entirely. Keir stood, completely confused for a few moments until the blond’s deep voice came from behind him. “I just wanted to see what you were capable of.”

He whirled around to continue glaring at him. “See what I was capable of? You couldn’t have just asked?” Though, he probably would have just grown some plants instead of conjuring a whole storm. Mice were scary enough when they were alive, let alone when they were scurrying about as nothing but bones.

“Calm down. I’m not going to attack you again.” Nyx held his hands up, the shadows dissipating around his hands and the mice dancing at his feet dropping into tiny piles of bones.

Keir stared at him, trying to decide. He wanted to strike Nyx down, but he didn’t know the extent of this new power. He could end up hurting him badly. As much as he wanted to see Nyx hurt a little, he didn’t want to permanently harm the guy. With a sigh, he let go, willing the magic to calm down and retreat back inside him. The lightning disappeared almost instantly, along with the adrenaline that had been pumping through him.

As soon as the last bit of energy had faded away, Keir fell to his knees. He groaned; it took everything in him not to crumple to the ground entirely. Clearly, he wasn’t used to exerting so much power at one time. He should really work on building his stamina.

“Are you okay?” Nyx was at his side almost immediately, holding his shoulders to keep him upright. He allowed his head to rest of his shoulder, letting out another small groan. He was so tired. As if this situation couldn’t get any worse, the clouds above them finally let loose, and it was now pouring buckets on the two. They were soaked in seconds, the rain coming out in sheets.

“Come on, let’s get you to my car.” Nyx stood and helped him up. Keir was in no state to protest at the moment. He wouldn’t be able to make it far on his own in this state. He leaned heavily against the blond as they slowly headed towards his car.

Keir and his parents moved to escape the city. It was too loud, too populated, and too grimy. No good for practicing nature magic. At least that’s what they said.
Really, it was to escape the feud between witch families and Keir’s sickness. It was only worsening, and they were hoping that a different environment would help with the illness that human doctors and healers alike couldn’t explain.
As his physical health continues to deteriorate, so does his mental health. Soon, the only thing that can pull him from the haze is the blond boy with pale blue eyes.
