The first thing it sees at the top of the second level is the bathroom located directly in front of it, followed by two bedrooms––one to the right and one to the left. Like a squirrel inspecting a location it has never visited, the creature pokes its head in and out of the bathroom a couple of times before fully stepping inside. It stares at the toilet with a look not of confusion or curiosity, but more of appreciation. It slowly approaches it, and like any human being in the history of human beings who have ever walked past a mirror, the creature immediately stops in its tracks to get its first look at the very thing that forced those soldiers last night to try with all their might to efface. Because it’s in a sense seeing itself for the first time, the creature stares at the person in the mirror with a conflicting expression, similar to the face of a mother forced to confront her daughter after years of neglect and vile mistreatment. The creature acknowledges what it sees, but whether it accepts it or not cannot be determined at this point.
It proceeds to look over the innumerable, almost glyphic, cryptic, black markings etched across its body and head, and specifically focuses on the two lines that run from directly under its right eye down towards its jawline and neck. It gingerly runs its fingers across them. They feel as natural and smooth as its own skin does, with no noticeable or discernible groove between the two. Not before long, the creature takes the hand it used to touch the black markings and reaches out towards the reflection and touches the area on the mirror where the markings on its face also appear. The creature holds its hand there and for a while nothing happens. Then after a couple of minutes, it brings its hand back, and begins to touch itself all over, as if running a diagnostic on its body to make sure everything is where it should be. The creature does this for a few minutes longer, taking its time inspecting each of its assets, before finally turning and exiting the bathroom, never once inspecting the toilet that originally drew it inside.
With two bedrooms left at its disposal practically begging for the creature to insert itself into, the creature decides to make a right first and head to the bedroom at the far end. This time, it doesn't peek in first before entering, in fact, it doesn't enter at all. That's because the creature is currently frozen as it stands in the doorway outside of the bedroom—and so is the old man who stares at the creature from his bed––granting the creature its first glimpse of an unarmed, seemingly, non-threatening human being.
