All the siblings sat in the living room and Lucille’s step-mom and dad were making dinner.
I offered to help but they said, ¨No. You can go sit with everyone else.¨
I went to go sit with the siblings and instantly I saw them all wanting to sit by me. Then I saw Lucille sitting on one of the three couches.
I looked at her and mouthed ¨You okay?¨
She nodded and I sat with the person who looked most eager…...Victoria.
Lucille must have been telepathically speaking to her siblings because a few seconds after I sat down between Quinn and Victoria, Lucille said. ¨Ok everyone, you can ask Asher one question each. So make that question count.¨
I was ready for what a bunch of teenagers could throw at me.
They went youngest to oldest.
Victoria went first, she asked me. “How old are you?”
Pretty basic kid question. But for a teenager it was odd. I didn’t think much of it and answered it.
“I’m 20, I’m going to be 21 next month,” I told her with a smile.
Quinn was next. He looked at my eye.
He bit his lip and said, “skip me please I need more time to think.”
Nobody thought anything of it. So they moved on
It was the twin’s turn.
Lawrence went first, “Ok my turn. What are those things on your upper forehead?” I knew he was talking about my horn nubs.
I told him, “They are my horns I’m a demon as you can tell.” I pointed to my demonic eye. He was satisfied with my answer.
Lynn was next and knowing what she told me earlier it would be interesting.
“Where is Spencer?” She asked me with a serious tone piercing her words.
I told her, “Well...um…..He was in a bad situation…...and….well I um….I helped him….leave”
She looked at me with tears in her eyes. She ran down the stairs.
It was Nicoletta's turn. Her’s was simple.
She asked, “So, where did you go to school at?”
It was a simple question but I answered it, “I went to Oakland High.”
Victoria’s eyes lit up when I said that.
She yelled, “That’s where Quinn, Lawrence, Lynn, and Nicoletta go to school. That’s where I’m going to school next year. Also, that's where Lucille went to school. Were you and Lucille friends.”
Lucille just told her “Vic you already used up your question.”
I didn’t mind the questions so I answered truthfully.
“Well, no not really, Victoria. I was in Lucille’s grade. But, I was homeschooled and I took most of the same classes with Lucille. I just was on a computer listening to the lesson.”
She thought that was super cool.
Quinn looked at me then at Lucille.
“Your turn Quinn.” Quinn looked at my eye again.
He finally asked his question, “You don’t have to answer mine, but what happened to your eye? Sorry if it’s sensitive.”
By this point, Lynn came back and I moved over to the two-person couch Lucille was sitting on. Lucille grabbed my hand trying to comfort me.
“Quinn, that's a sensitive topic for him,” Lucille said calmly as if I was seven.
I took a deep breath. Then I told him the truth.
“I had a rough childhood, and someone I cared for cut my eye. I could defend myself, but I’m nothing like that person.”
I couldn’t bring myself to tell him the real truth. I noticed myself tearing up. Lucille squeezed my hand. I blinked away my tears and that was when Lucille’s step-mom and dad called us to eat.
