“What!” I yelled in shock.
“I think the baby is coming,” Lucille said with pain in her voice.
“But it’s a month early,” I said panicking.
“YOU THINK I DON’T KNOW THAT!” She yelled at me through the pain.
“The baby can’t be coming NOW,” Now I was terrified.
I knew the baby would come just not this early. I didn’t want the baby to be sick or anything.
“DO SOMETHING ASHER,” She yelled at me.
I grabbed her hand and pulled to the pick-up. I helped her into the passenger’s seat and rushed to the ER.
When we got to the ER. I helped her out of the pick-up and into the emergency room. I grabbed her hand and ran to the front desk.
“Hello sir, how can I help you?” The receptionist asked me politely.
“She is having a baby,” I told her panicking and showing her Lucille.
She wrote some things on a clipboard, pushed a button, and motioned for us to follow her. We followed her to a back room and we waited.
The doctor walked in and we waited longer. Lucille was even more nervous than ever.
“Asher, what if-” Lucille tried saying before I cut her off.
“No, don’t think about the past. You are your own person. You are a strong woman. You can do this.” I told her.
After a long 25 hours, the baby finally came, but the doctors didn’t want us to see the baby. All they told us was it’s a girl. We heard her cry, so we knew she was alive. Lucille laid in the bed and looked at me with a scared expression on her face.
“What do you think is wrong with her?” Lucille nervously asked me.
“I bet everything is ok. She is crying after all.” I told her trying to see the baby.
One doctor walked over to us. We were scared of what he was going to tell us about the baby. I just hoped the baby was healthy.
“Is either one of you a demon?” The doctor asked.
“I am,” I said pulling my hair up to show my horn nubs and showing my demon eye.
He gestured for me to follow him. I followed him to where they brought the baby. I gasped at the sight of her. She was smaller than usual. She had nubby horns and a small tail. She had lots of hair. Her hair was a light pink color.
The doctors had already cleaned her up. She was crying. I grabbed her little hand. Once I put my finger in her hand she gripped my finger and started to quiet down.
“How did you quiet her down so easily,” One of the doctors asked me in awe.
“The connection all blood demons share,” I explained.
“Blood demons?” the doctor asked.
“Demons that are related through blood,” I said still holding my baby girl’s hand.
Now actually seeing my baby and holding her hand it hits me. I’m a dad to a beautiful baby girl.
The doctors looked at each other and nodded. They picked up the baby and brought her over to Lucille. She noticed the baby’s horns and tail. I noticed the thin layer of skin that covered her wings. I looked at Lucille and she started crying.
“She’s perfect,” Lucille told the doctors as they gave her the baby.
“What will you name her,” The doctor asked her.
“Layla,” Lucille replied holding our new baby girl.
Lucille held Layla in her arms not wanting to let her go. A few seconds later Layla started crying. Lucille tried to rock her, but she didn’t stop crying. I put my finger in her hand and she stopped.
I heard one of the doctors tell Lucille, “Now he’s a keeper alright.”
