Kyle threw on his normal flannel attire and grabbed a backpack off a nearby shelf. He shoved in a water bottle, some cash, and a pair of electric blue wireless headphones. Then he pulled his phone off his bluetooth charger and stuffed it in his back pocket.
He stomped back down the stairs and headed towards his front door. He turned over his shoulder to glance at his mother, whose frizzy red hair could barely be seen over the top of the couch.
"Mom, I'm going out for a bit, I'll be back," Kyle called out before turning back to face the door.
His mother responded as he stepped outside, "Don't be back too late! We're going out for dinner!"
Kyle closed the door as his mother finished his sentence. He stepped off his porch and started to walk along the sidewalk. He swung his backpack around to his front and it hit his chest with a soft thump. He unzipped it and reached in, then pulled out his headphones. His backpack slid slowly down to his side before he rolled his shoulder and it settled against his back again.
He pressed a small button on the right ear of the headphones and they beeped to life. A small green light appeared to indicate power and battery life. Kyle slid the device onto his head and took out his phone. He scrolled through his playlist and selected a song, pressed play and let it blast through the headphones.
Kyle liked his music loud. It drowned out the ambient noises of the city. He gazed around him at the lush scenery that gave way before him.
Kyle was lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful and scenic parts of Steamboat Springs. His house lay just in front of a lake, and several other large houses surrounded it. This small community was set up near a large city, but not close enough to completely destroy the view of the surrounding nature.
Birds sang in the trees, and a gentle breeze blew flowers and tall grass like silk curtains. Kyle continued to walk along the sidewalk that wound itself around the lake. He passed several houses, bobbing his head to the silent music that only poured into his ears.
He slowed his pace as he neared a light blue house that nearly blended in with the sky. It rose up three stories, as most houses did nowadays, with white windows and a black front door.
Kyle had always admired the way this house looked. The colors were gentle and calm and blended in with everything that surrounded it. Then you could look at the door and instantly change your opinion of the house, The black color of the door was harsh against the light colors, and looked like the entrance to a dark mysterious tunnel rather than a front door.
The gentle breeze shook the bushes in front of the house, rattling the leaves. Kyle reached up and slid off his headphones, then began to approach the house.
He pushed the headphones back into his unzipped bag and stepped onto the porch of the house. He reached up and knocked on the door and waited. No answer.
Well it was a big house, maybe the doorbell was a better option. Kyle pressed the small glowing rectangle beside the door, and a pleasant chime rang through the house.
Kyle stepped back and waited once again. He heard movement behind the door and this time it opened. Kyle let out a gasp.
