“FREEZE!” An officer shouted, pushing the gun closer to the two frightened kids.
Summer shouted, “Oh my god what’s happening?!”
“Shut your mouth and hold still!” The officer shouted in return. His partner turned and went to the front of the VELH. He returned with a device that looked like a wide peeler. But instead of a blade, a thin plasma line sizzled between the two sides of the Y-shape.
“Scan em,” The first officer commanded his partner, without breaking eye contact with the kids.
The second officer clicked a button on his little “peeler” machine and it crackled, and the plasma line burst into s scanning ray which started to run up and down their bodies. Kyle pinched the Violet Vibe tightly between his thumb and his palm.
Kyle started to speak, “Hey! What are you-“
“I said shut it!” The officer glared at him.
The scanner let out a choked little sound and fizzled back into the thin plasma line. The second officer focused his eyes on the screen of his scanner. A red line pulsed against the blue screen like a heart monitor. Then the red line steadied and the words “No Match” popped up on the screen.
The scanner officer nudged his partner and held the device out to him.
“Sir the signal didn’t come from these two, it must be farther in the woods.”
The first officer raised his gun from the teens faces.
“Apologies civilians, please go about your business.” He turned away and started to walk back to the front of the vehicle.
Kyle grabbed the rail of the VELH and shouted, “Hey! What the hell was that about?”
The officer turned sharply, “That is classified information civilian, please go back to your business.” “You can’t just scan us and not tell us why! That’s…that’s an invasion of privacy!” Kyle shouted back.
The officer turned again and walked up to the rail so his face was inches away fro Kyle’s.
“Unless you wanted to be arrested civilian, you will let go of this vehicle and go back to your business. Understand?” He glared at Kyle, who returned the gesture, but let go of the rails and took several steps back.
The VELH hummed again as it lifted another few inches off the ground, before taking off in the same direction it had been pointing when it struck the tree.
Summer let out a long breath, “What the hell just happened? Patrol VELH’s never come close to Old Oak!”
“I don’t know,” Kyle responded, leaning down and placing the drug back into Summer’s purse. “But they didn’t do anything about the drive, even when they scanned us. Isn’t that kinda, I don’t know, counterproductive for a police officer?”
Summer tightened her still messy bun.
“They were probably doing something super important and super classified,” she said, adding air quotes to the last part. She sighed, “I wonder where they were going.”
Kyle snorted, “I’m sure you could follow their path of destruction to find out.”
“Probably,” Summer agreed. “Oh well, we should probably head back, I don’t really wanna stay out much longer if there’s a shit ton of police floating around.”
Kyle nodded. They both grabbed their bags and started to head back down the path.
All of a sudden, there was a huge boom like an explosion, and a huge plume of smoke and fire rose from somewhere deeper in the forest.
