I woke up early in the morning, ready to start the day. Right when the sun shined through the window blinds.
“Lars, move over, you're taking all the space on the bed.” A voice mumbled in their sleep. Oh wait, I remember who this person is.
“Sorry, Jake…” I moved over in the bed and sat up, rubbing my eyes. I got out of bed and stretched.
“It's fine, just be sure to clean up your clothes on the floor before you leave.” Jake turned around so he could face me. He was pretty. Full lips and blushy cheeks with beautiful blue eyes. Too bad that he's only a one-off, right?
“Kay’. See ya, Jakey.” I said, now that I had my clothes in my bookbag. He grumbled a “bye” as I walked out of his room, down the stairs and out of his house. He locked the door and placed the key under the doormat.
I looked up at the neighborhood around me. It was normal. Normal for Anataea, anyway. There was trash on the streets and clothes hanging from the small balconies.
I sighed and said, “Another day in Anataea.”
Walking down the streets of Anantaea was never something that I enjoyed doing. It was more of the faces of the people walking near me, living their lives. There was a certain “trend” you could see with the people living in the Anantaea District of Agrius. They weren't dirty or anything. But they seemed to be too tired to really make themselves look very presentable. That's why I was so surprised when I found out that Jake lived in this district. But he said that it was because of his family’s financial problems. He said he would leave Anantaea once he had enough money. I told him I would help out, but he denied me and just went back to being all cute like usual. Damn, I was just trying to help out.
“Hey, need a ride?” A taxi driver pulled up next to me.
“Sure. How much?” I asked, walking up to the car.
“Only $2.50. Where are you trying to go?” He pressed a button and the passenger door opened up slowly.
“The Rubia District. I have business there that I need to get to.” I got into the car and closed the door. I leaned back into the seat and sighed.
“Better get you there fast. Apparently, there's some kind of protest going on on the bridge to the Rubia District. Hopefully we can get there before it starts getting violent.” The driver started the car and began driving away.
He sped down the streets and eventually, over the bridge. There were people standing there, holding signs that said things like “Justice for Jacrice!” and “Gov’t is hiding him from us!”. Jacrice was a journalist who recently “commited suicide” only days after he exposed the leader of his home district, Anantaea. A large amount of people believe that Jacrice was murdered by a Hitman hired by the leader to protect his family name. I honestly didn't believe any of that crap. He was a dumb kid. He probably just guzzled down some pills and it was too much for his body. Poor kid couldn't take it and died. But these protesters can't accept it for some reason.
“We’re here. I only take chip.” The driver opened the door, snapping me out of my slight trance.
I got out, showed him the financial chip on my phone, and when he scanned it, I walked away from the taxi. I made my way from the drop-off spot to the main government building. Strangely enough, my work partner was standing right outside.
“Hey! Lars! What's up?” She ran over to me and we shared a fist bump.
“Nothing. How about you?” I asked. My partner, Sasha, smiled at me and winked.
“Feelin’ fine. I was just playing this new game recently. The name's DarkKnight, I think. It's pretty cool! You gotta fight a bunch of people in this dome and there's a rain cloud that suffocates you as the game keeps going!” Sasha explained. I nodded, not really knowing anything about video games.
“Huh, you really love those video games?” We began walking to the building and up the front stairs.
“Yeah. They're pretty fun if you give them a try. It's worth spending your money.” Sasha opened the door for us and we walked inside.
“Hm.” We kept walking and entered an elevator where two children stood.
“Good morning, Mr.Bulcarti and Miss Stanford. How was your morning?” The boy of the two children gave us a frightening smile.
“Fine. So, same as usual today, Silas?” I asked the boy, who held his twin sister’s hands.
He nodded and his sister whispered something in his ear. Silas giggled and turned to Sasha. “My sister says you look wonderful today.”
“Thanks, Evelyn! You look very nice today too.” Sasha exclaimed.
Evelyn whispered something else to Silas. The two began to speak quietly to each other. I looked at Sasha with a raised eyebrow. She shrugged and eventually, the elevator doors opened up. The four of us got out and walked down the long basement hallway. Steam puffed from the pipes along the walls. Soldiers stood at the walls of the hallway, holding large guns filled with bullets that could probably take out an elephant with one shot.
“You're still working with those kids, Lars?” Sasha stared down at her feet.
“Yeah, I kinda feel bad for em’ though. There's this one kid-”, I began a sentence but quieted down before I could continue, “There’s this one kid that I like. He's got brown hair and big eyes. The name’s Reese, I think. Codenamed Peacock.”
“Wait, you don't mean to tell me that you're getting a soft spot for this one, right?” Sasha squinted at me, hitting me on the arm.
“No, no! Trust me. I don't have ‘soft spot’ for anyone. He's just a nice looking guy is all. Plus, he acts pretty cute too.” I said, waving my hands to persuade her.
She made a “mhm” noise and we continued to walk in silence, until we approached a door.
“Have a good day, Lars! Tell me if anything crazy happens!” Sasha called out as she raced the twins down the hallway to their office and ran to her’s.
I opened up the door and walked in. I was greeted by the shine of my monitor screens. I turned on the light and closed the door behind me. I walked to the seat and sat down, leaning back ever so slightly. I turned on the surveillance program and clicked the “Trail Camera”.
I watched as Reese got picked up by the other kid, Red Panda or Asher, I think his name is. I looked closer to see Reese struggling against Asher’s grip. My other monitor dinged and the views climbed to a total of 2 million.
“Sick bastards…” I mumbled as I flicked a button to make the next people appear.
