“Alright, that should be good… At least I hope.” It had been about a week since the incident with Robin’s parents and he had by all means mostly returned to his usual demeanor with one notable exception. Since then he’d only had one person over and even then, he hadn’t seemed very interested in his usual affairs, “Well, I guess I should be getting to bed…”
“Hey, Sully?” I turned to the red-haired boy as I stuffed a notebook back in my bag, “Want to watch a movie with me tomorrow night? If you’re busy I understand…”
“Geez, you don’t need to be so desperate with me…” I laughed through a yawn as I placed my bag on the opposite side of the room, “I should be completely free after my test tomorrow, so let’s do it.
“So, you’re saying I can be as needy as I want then…?” He smirked sending me a not so casual wink, “We could really do it if you want.”
“What about this conversation is making you nervous?” I sighed placing a hand to my face, “You can just talk to me without feeling so vulnerable, ya know…”
“What can I say?” Robin said with a shrug as he eyed me carefully, “I know a good face when I see one.”
“That doesn’t even make sense…”
“Sorry…”
. . .
All done… I thought taking a deep breath before taking the test booklet and scantron to the front of the lecture hall, Time to head back then… My keys jingled from my pocket as I pulled them loose and put the car key into the ignition before heading towards the apartment.
“Hey, I’m back!” I called as I opened the door to find Robin laid out on the couch waiting for me with a wide grin taking up nearly half of his face, “I’ll be right out just let me put my bag away.” Just as I said I put the bag away and came to join him on the couch, “So, what did you pick out?”
“Just this one…” He held up the case smiling even wider than before, if that was even possible, “You like scary stuff?” I only nodded a bit as I looked at the severed head on the case of the film, “Oh…” He whimpered a bit as he put the disk in, “And here, I was hoping that I could have you cuddle up to me when you get scared…”
Was that a nervous flirt, or…? “Sorry, no such luck.” Seriously, how the hell am I supposed to take that???
. . .
“Why did you pick this movie again?” Robin had cuddled up to me with his face-balanced carefully in the curve of my neck and with each jump scare, I could feel the heat of his breath on my neck as he screamed out in fear before clinging to me even further. I wonder if he can feel how hard my heart is beating right now…? “If you want, I can put something else on,” I suggested only slightly wondering if that was even possible given how tightly he was holding on to me.
“No,” He insisted firmly peeking up from my shoulder for just an instant before returning it, “I want to see how it ends…”
“How can you see how it ends if you’re hardly even watching it?” I looked down at him wondering if he could even hear the movie given how loud my heart was at that moment.
“I’m watching it!” He insisted getting even closer.
. . .
“Okay, time for bed…” I grunted plugging in my phone and heading to the bathroom to brush my teeth.
Just as I had slipped beneath the covers, I heard a knock at my door. What in the world did he want this late at night? I trotted to the door opening it slightly only to see a weepy looking Robin standing there with his blanket in hand making him look more like a five-year-old as opposed to a boy that was older than me.
“What is it, Robin…?” I asked through my grogginess, “Is something the matter?”
“I’m uh…” He muttered fumbling with his fingers a bit, “I’m scared, could I sleep in your room tonight. That movie was really scary…”
“Jeremy….” I let out a deep breath as the boy gave me puppy dog eyes, “Do you think I’m your mom and dad?”
“I can call you Daddy if you want me to…?” He suggested quickly as though that was his goal all along.
Seriously, I’m having a harder and harder time telling if he’s just nervous or not… “Fine.” I pinched the bridge of my nose, “Just don’t hog the blankets…”
. . .
Why did I think this was a good idea…? Our backs were pressed together thanks to the proximity of my bed and yet again my heart was a flutter, it’s really warm… Based on the noises I was hearing Robin was already fast asleep. He was snoring gently with his back moving slowly against mine. My heart was still going nonstop but some combination of the warmth and closeness was actually making me feel a bit sleepy. I yawned eventually feeling the heaviness of sleep fall over me until everything fell away.
. . .
“Geez…” I forgot he slept in here for a second there… I let out a deep breath as I carefully shambled over the red-haired boy, “Perhaps, I’ll just make us both something before I go to work…”
