I scooted it aside, “Take me to Christian.”
“I..”
“Or I tell on you for sleeping on me.”
She nervously looked around for a second and finally sighed, “She has been exiled from the kingdom. I would take you to her if I could, but I cannot. I am sorry Prince.”
I looked out the window to see a bird now sitting on the window cill and watched it look around. She looked at my eye patch, “Oh, you found it. I was going to some to look for it later when I didn’t see it on you. You don’t have to wear it though while in your room.” She went to remove it and I pushed her hand away. She bowed and took a few steps away from my bed. I looked at the food next to me.
“I’m not hungry.”
“Please take a few bites. You need to eat, to grow up to be a big and strong…”
“No.” I dangled my feet over the bed and hopped down. I walked over to the window and looked at the bird more closely. It didn’t seem to be afraid of me. I guessed it was due to the glass between us. I turned around when I heard the door close behind me. I noticed she had taken the food back out and attempted to push open the window. I noticed that It had been latched a little higher up. I glanced around the room and noticed my stick horse sitting off to my left. I picked it up and used it to un due to the lock. I swung open the window and watched as the bird hopped back a little and continued to stare at me. I stuck my hand out and watched as it looked down. I could tell it was disappointed when it saw nothing.
I heard my stomach growl, “I shouldn’t have said I wasn’t hungry. I was just in the moment.” I mumbled to the bird.
“Ah, hurry! Hurry!” I could hear yelling coming from the hallway and walked towards the door. I reached and opened the door a little to see a few maids running past my room. I walked out in the hall and noticed them go into a room a few doors from mine. I stumbled over to the door and noticed both were shut. I put my ear against the door to hear a woman crying and screaming. A few other maids could be heard yelling back at her. A shadow appeared over me and I turned around to see Father. I stared at him for a moment as he glared down at me.
“What are you doing out of your room? Aren’t you supposed to be getting rest?”
“I am fine.” He leaned down and touched my cheek. I twitched as I noticed I had a small scrap on my cheek he rubbed. He moved his hand over my eye patch and a disgusted face became clear. He stood back to his feet.
“Prince, you shouldn’t be out here.” Jessie exclaimed as she ran over towards me. She bowed to Father and grabbed my hand, “I do apologies, my King.” She began to walk back down the hall back to my room. I watched as he went inside the room. I could now hear a baby’s cry coming from it. Jessie stopped for a moment and smiled, “Looks like you have a healthy new sibling. Hopefully it is a boy though.” As we made it to my door, I watched as Father walked swiftly out of the room and back down the hall way with a disappointed face. “I guess it was a girl.” We walked inside my room and I noticed the bird had flown into my room. Jessie panicked and tried to shoo it away. I noticed it began to fly and landed on my shoulder. I gently pet its chest and looked at Jessie.
“Can I keep her?” I asked as she walked over to me.
“It could have diseases from outside. The King would kill me if you were to get sick.” She walked over and picked up the bird with both hands from my shoulder. She walked back over to the window and threw it out. I watched it fly off as she shut the window and brushed her hands off on her skirt. “Now, I need to get you back into bed. We need you heathy as can be.” She picked me up and walked back over to the bed, “I want to check on the baby and see if everything went well.” She tucked me in and began to walk out of the room. I glanced out the window to see the bird had come back to the window. I smiled and got out of my bed. I walked back to the window.
“So, I now have a sister? Father looked disappointed that it was a female. Maybe he was trying to replace me already.” I laughed to myself, “I wouldn’t be to against not being King.” I got the horse stick again and opened the window back up. The bird hopped around a few times, “I think I’ll name you Freeda. You’ll be my other set of eyes.”
