Douglas was uncertain how he should proceed. Even if he didn’t believe Taya he'd have to believe Henry, one of his best students. Douglas knew Henry was a smart kid, very smart, no room for irrational thought. A bit too kind in his opinion but there were far worst character traits in a person. Henry was ambitious, dedicated but a sense of integrity that he himself was admittedly lacking. If he could vouch for her then that had to be the truth. He looked the young couple over. The possibility that someone might try to hurt one of his students made his stomach plummet. His mind went to his own daughter.
"Whose number was it?" He asked her.
"It was Henry’s number. That's why I came here. When I couldn’t reach him after that call I came straight here."
“Why didn’t you contact someone else?”
It had occurred to Taya that in her urgency to get to school, perhaps she should have contacted the police. “I didn’t think they’d come if all I told them I’d received one threatening phone call. When I arrived I came through the main entrance of the lecture building." Taya said. "I stumbled into Margot as we entered the computer lab. That's when we were attacked."
Taya explained everything that had happened to them. The equipment that was thrown at them, coming across Margot and the man that had attacked them. Though Margot had insisted that it wasn't a man but more like a living Shadow. When no one believed her Margot shoved the video camera in his face. He took it aside and watched the video. Taya shared a look with Henry. She moved toward him, he'd been so quiet, she realized.
She put a hand on his chest. He took her hand in his, Taya noticing that it was shaking. He said, "You could have been hurt."
"I’m alright." She whispered. He squeezed her hand gently.
Henry looked her in the eye. "I'm not sure I believe Margot but I believe you. Did you get a good look at the man who attacked you?"
Taya didn't know how to answer his question. The image of the man with the red blonde hair flashed into her mind. Maybe I have. She thought.
Without warning the lights went off in the whole room, plunging everyone into darkness. There was shouting and swearing and someone crying because they hadn't saved any of their work. Taya held onto Henry's hand and reached out for Margot with her other. She smacked her friend in the face without realizing it. "Damn it Taya! Watch it!"
"I'm sorry, just grab hold of me! We can't get separated!"
Margot held onto Taya’s arm and Henry held onto her hand. Some students had turned the flashlights of the phones on and there was some light, however small. The three of them moved awkwardly in the direction of the lights the room in the mayhem. It made little difference to Taya, trying to prepare herself for the next onslaught from this damn Shadow ghost. Margot tried to say something to Taya. She couldn't hear over the mayhem. People were yelling, pushing each other around, searching for an exit or a way to turn on the power.
They were stuck in pitch darkness. Even with the lights shining from the phones they weren't enough. Then, one by one, every small piece of light faded and everything became pitch black.
“What the hell? My phone’s dead!” Someone yelled.
"Everyone please be calm!" Dr. Douglas's voice carried throughout the room though no one cared to listen.
Henry, frustrated, slammed his hand against the table. "Damn it! I left my phone in my bag. Taya, do you have yours?"
"No, I don't. I lost it when we were attacked." She said.
A familiar sound interrupted Taya, making her jump. The ringtone, a familiar little chime, blared away somewhere in the darkness. The whole room went silent.
"Whose phone is that?"
"It's not mine!" One voice said.
"Mine isn't even turning on!" Shouted another.
"Find the phone!" Margot's voice yelled from somewhere in the darkness.
There was a mad scramble to find the phone, people shoving, colliding into each other and stumbling in the darkness. It still kept ringing but Taya couldn't see where it was coming from. She tried to turn around but couldn't without letting go of either Margotc or Henry. She held firm to them, listening to their voices. Someone shoved past them and Taya was pushed, releasing her hold on Margot but still managed to hold onto Henry's hand. She felt her back hit another body. The phone still continued to ring. She apologized. Instead of an answer, she felt a hand grab hold of her shoulder. A chill went through her like a knife. She tried to move to get away but the grip held firm. All she felt was numb.
