Dawn here wasn’t as rosy as Iola was used to in the vast verdant expanse of her homeland.
Yet at least the rain had stopped. The sky remained overcast, and the occasional streak of lightning lanced across the gloomy dark clouds.
But the sound of thunder was muffled and distant, indicating that the worst of the storm had moved on.
All around them, the craggy hillside remained damp, dark and depressing. Dacia was already a few paces down the trail when Iola stepped out of the cave.
Whatever sleep she did get was restless and very little. The responsibility on her young shoulders weighed down heavily on Iola.
She was young, but she was not naive.
Losing both her parents before her tenth year made the blissful years of childhood come to an abrupt end. She learnt life lessons the hard way.
And life for the River-Plains Clan, her people, was indeed very hard.
Her grandfather, Haas, was the shaman, or spirit leader, of the clan for as long as she could remember.
A position of great importance and honour that - among all clans that shared the vast fertile valleys and grasslands.
Lands that were being coveted mile by mile year after year by invading hordes from cities like Sidusca.
Powerful war chiefs and shamans like her grandfather rallied the clans to hold out against the invaders.
And these influential leaders were often slain or abducted by the invaders to break a clan’s morale.
