DESTINY BECKONS

FIVE

FIVE

Sep 20, 2019

“We will be clear of these hills in another turn of the glass...” Dacia called back to her. “Then it’s all farmland up to the gates of Sidusca.”

“Yes, lands that rightfully belong to the clans...” Iola responded angrily. “...lands taken away from my people.”

“Might makes right, little one.” The sellsword replied grimly. “Perhaps someday your people will claim it all back... and more.”

“Perhaps.” Iola all but whispered, feeling a strange surge within her.

They walked on in silence for a while, keeping a very brisk pace. Hills gave way to the plains.

Vast stretches of farmland spread far before them. Once these lands were lush forests full of vegetation and game, but the encroachers had stripped all of nature’s bounty within a decade.

Iola looked all around her in sadness. The land seemed to reach out to her, pleading for salvation, to be free once more.

The clans lived in harmony with the lands, taking only what they needed and giving as much back. The encroachers from the west only took from the land, never giving anything in return.

When they had lain waste what they had, they moved into newer pastures to plunder in order to sustain the opulence of big cities like Sidusca.

When she had first heard that her grandfather was missing after another one of the skirmishes near the northern valley, she had feared the worst.

After her parents’ passing, Haas became her guardian and raised her. She couldn’t bear another loss of someone so dear to her.

She paused a while before a little stream, her eyes misting over as memories of that terrible time flooded her mind’s eye.
