Iola looked at the direction the mercenary was pointing to. The southern walls of the city loomed before them and the gates were open to travellers.
The sun was almost overhead, but the sky was still overcast, sparing them from the noonday heat.
People of every kind, creed and trade were making their way in and out of the large city, and no one spared them a second look as they jostled in with the crowd of merchants, farmers and entertainers.
“Stay close, Iola.” Dacia kept her voice low as they walked through the tall gates and into the bustling city of Sidusca. “If anyone does accost us, we tell them we are travelling entertainers out to make a living.”
“Where are the guards?” Iola whispered, making her way around an overloaded ox-drawn cart.
“The city has grown complacent in its opulence.” The sell-sword replied with a snort. “They believe nothing is a threat to them. All the better for us then.”
“What kind of entertainers are we supposed to be?” Iola whispered as she deftly side stepped a stumbling drunk.
“I am a knife-thrower and you are my lovely assistant.” Dacia’s ale stained grin didn’t do much to explain anything to Iola.
“Do we have to entertain anyone?” She raised an eyebrow at the muscular mercenary.
“Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.” Dacia gave the younger woman’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze. “Come, I know a place where we will find the help we need.”
“What kind of place is that?” Iola glanced around the busy side street they turned into.
“A tavern.” The taller woman licked her lips and peered ahead. “…and if I remember correctly, it is just around the corner of this bustling marketplace.”
