“This eve, a turn of the glass before sunset.” Dacia nodded at her shabby old friend. “We meet at this selfsame table.”
“Aye, this eve.” The large man gave Iola a gap toothed grin and rose up, pushing his chair back. “I will bring news of where your quarry is being held.”
“You have my gratitude.” Iola forced a smile, shuddering inwardly.
“For a friend of a friend, any time.” Kadar slapped a large palm on Dacia’s shoulder then turned on his heel and walked away.
For a man of his imposing size, he was rather nimble on his feet, effortlessly wading his way through the tavern’s lunch hour crowd.
Iola watched him melt away into the rush of jostling bodies then turned to Dacia.
“Can we trust this man?” She asked, inhaling sharply.
“I can.” Dacia nodded, taking a sip of her ale. “I have known Kadar a good while now... and remember when I told you of escaping those dungeons? I wouldn’t have without his help.”
“He must have a price for his help.” Iola didn’t suppress her snort.
“Naturally.” Dacia grinned through ale stained teeth. “But he is a good man.”
Iola nodded thoughtfully. She felt that about the man as well.
She did not understand how she could, but somehow she had sensed that Kadar could be trusted, even if she despised the way he presented himself.
“Kadar will keep his word and be here on time.” Dacia suddenly rose, dropping a few copper coins on the table to pay for their drinks. “In the meantime we have a bit of work to do.”
“Work?” Iola looked confused. “What work?”
The nineteen year old clanswoman had hoped to get some sleep on a soft bed that afternoon, upstairs in one of the rooms they had rented.
The night before in the cave was anything but restful.
